A SaruKuma writer visits Sousaku Katei Ryori Sorakuru, a creative home-style restaurant in Yamamuro, Kita-ku, Kumamoto City. Price guide: from 950 yen. We’ve also covered family-friendly tips, access, and opening hours.

Introducing Sorakuru

Hello there! This is Gussan, your SaruKuma writer.
Today we’re heading to Yamamuro in Kita-ku, Kumamoto City to check out Sousaku Katei Ryori Sorakuru, a creative home-cooking restaurant that has become a local favorite.
Since opening in December 2021, Sorakuru has quickly become a reservation-only hotspot.
Even on weekdays it’s fully booked, so I had almost given up β€” until I heard they offered takeout bento boxes! I rushed over to grab one.
The restaurant sits next to an apartment building, with seven parking spaces in front of the shop.
The lot is fairly tight, so it might be tricky for nervous drivers or anyone with a larger vehicle.
If parking feels intimidating, I recommend the coin parking at the nearby Kinou Hospital.
There are two more spots beside the shop, but they’re also on the snug side.
The lot has a few blind spots and faces a main road, so please keep a close eye on little ones.
Lunch hours run from 11:00 to 14:30.
Just look at it β€” besides your main dish, the lunch set comes with this many side dishes!
For 950 yen, you can practically hit that ideal goal of 30 different ingredients a day.
Takeout bento boxes start at 800 yen and can be customized to your budget.
In the evenings Sorakuru transforms into an izakaya, with a generous drinks menu β€” including non-alcoholic options for designated-driver moms and parents.
Look forward to dishes like Kagoshima red-chicken sashimi from 620 yen, a 500-yen three-piece sake-friendly platter, and plenty of fried treats kids love.

Steamed dishes, rice plates, grilled items, smoked specialties β€” the lineup is wide enough that you’ll never get bored.

Sorakuru’s Recommended Menu

Four of us friends ordered the 800-yen takeout bento.
The moment we opened the lid, we all gasped β€” the quality was way beyond what we expected!
All this for 800 yen?! Surely they can’t be making any profit on this (lol).
The box is packed with vibrant, healthy-looking sides.
The portions are generous, but the seasoning is delicate β€” easy on the stomach.
There are even some stylish vegetables you almost never see in a bento box.
Seriously, are they actually breaking even?! (lol)
The bento itself was already impressive, but the rice ball stole my heart.
The little pickle placed on top β€” clearly added with care after the rice ball was made β€” was a sweet touch that showed Sorakuru’s hospitality.
The day’s onigiri fillings were tarako (cod roe) and shirasu (whitebait). Even the smallest details reveal real thoughtfulness.
By the way, extra rice balls or extra fillings can be added for 200 yen each.
This one is a friend’s add-on rice ball, and it was packed with tarako.
If you’re sharing a meal with little ones, ordering just the onigiri or extra side dishes is a smart move.
Fillings can usually be swapped for kid-friendly options too, so feel free to ask when ordering.
The days are getting longer and warmer here in Kumamoto.
Why not pick up a Sorakuru bento and head out for a picnic that nourishes both body and spirit?
