Introducing Rising Sun Coffee
Hello travelers! This is Mido 🌳, a writer for Sarukuma.
Today I’m sharing a wonderful little spot located in Shimizu Kameicho, Kita Ward, Kumamoto City:
Rising Sun Coffee
The café is just a short walk from Hakenomiya Station, and it’s also close to Hakenomiya Park and the Kumamoto City Water Science Museum — making it a perfect stop during a day of sightseeing.
A traditional banner flag and a charming signboard greet you at the entrance of Rising Sun Coffee.
The cute door and windows make for an irresistible welcome 🥰 Let’s step inside!
Rising Sun Coffee is housed in a beautifully renovated traditional Japanese house (kominka), creating a warm and atmospheric space that captures the soul of old Japan.
There are three four-seat tables, one two-seat table, and counter seating as well.
The window-side seats are perfect for a relaxed afternoon. The chairs and decorations are adorable too 🥰
Inside the shop, you’ll also find baked goods, coffee beans, and tea-bag coffee available for purchase — great souvenirs to take home!
Here’s the Rising Sun Coffee menu ✨
<Cake Set> 1,200 yen
A homemade cake paired with a drink of your choice from the coffee menu.
<Chef’s Choice Pasta>
・Pasta + Drink: 1,500 yen
・Pasta + Cake: 1,600 yen
・Pasta + Drink + Cake: 1,900 yen
<Coffee Menu>
・Hot Coffee: 500 yen
・Iced Coffee: 500 yen
・Espresso: 500 yen
・Black Tea: 500 yen
・Café Latte: 600 yen
・Vienna Coffee: 600 yen
・Japanese Black Tea Latte: 600 yen
・Matcha Latte: 600 yen
・Banana Café Latte: 600 yen
The pasta and cake selections change daily.
On this visit, the menu featured tempting dishes like “Fried Eggplant and Bacon Tomato Sauce Pasta” — everything looked absolutely delicious ✨
Soft drinks include cola, ginger ale, orange, apple, and grapefruit.
All prices include tax.
The cakes for the cake set are displayed in the showcase.
On this day’s lineup: Basque cheesecake, gateau chocolat, apple pie, and mille crêpes.
The Banana Café Latte is available both hot and iced.
A banana-flavored café latte was a first for me 👀 — definitely an intriguing choice!
Next up, let me introduce some seasonal summer menu items.
Please note these aren’t on the current menu, but it’s worth bookmarking for next summer 📝
Iced Café Latte with Coffee Jelly: 800 yen
Lemon Soda: 600 yen
Strawberry Soda: 600 yen
Strawberry Milk: 600 yen
Shaved Ice (strawberry or lemon flavor): 800 yen
Made with house-made syrups.
Although those last items are summer specials, the “Strawberry Milk” and “Strawberry Soda” can still be ordered year-round.
Also, while not on the regular menu, the staff can make “Hot Cocoa” and “Hot Milk” by request — just ask!
Rising Sun Coffee also displays a lovely initiative called “Mahō no Seal” (Magic Stickers).
These stickers are given out to comfort crying children and ease the worries of parents.
The original stickers are made through donations and distributed for free, with the heartfelt goal of “creating a kinder future for parenting, one sticker at a time.”
It’s such a warm, thoughtful initiative that truly touches the heart.
While Rising Sun Coffee doesn’t have children’s chairs or cutlery, drinks are served in plastic cups with lids, so unfinished beverages can easily be taken home — a wonderful touch for families.
If you’re sharing pasta with a child, the staff will happily serve it on a separate plate so the little ones can enjoy that special feeling of having their own meal alongside the adults.
The owner warmly told us, “Children are very welcome here” ✨ Such kind words ✨
Recommended Menu at Rising Sun Coffee
Since I came specifically for the cakes, I ordered the <Cake Set> for 1,200 yen!
My choices: “Apple Pie” for the cake, and “Iced Banana Café Latte” for the drink.
The pasta and other drinks looked equally tempting 🍝
The lattes even come with beautiful latte art — so charming I almost ordered one too 💘
Wow 💛 The cake plate is absolutely beautiful — instant excitement!
Fresh fruit and even ice cream on the side. Pure happiness on a plate 💛
The apples inside are tender and gently sweet, while the pastry outside is delightfully crispy and flaky.
It’s truly, truly delicious!!!
The “Banana Café Latte” is amazing!
If you sip from the bottom of the straw, you taste the banana drink; lift it higher and you get the café latte — two flavors in one! And by the end, when they mix together, you get a third delicious experience ✨
It’s seriously SO good!
Rising Sun Coffee is within walking distance of Hakenomiya Park and the Kumamoto City Water Science Museum.
