Introducing Izumigaoka Park

Hello, fellow travelers!
I’m Ayu Mama, a writer for “SaruKuma.”

Today, I’m finally introducing a park I’ve been wanting to share for ages!
Located in Suizen, Higashi Ward, Kumamoto City,
this is Izumigaoka Park.

It’s a neighborhood park nestled in a residential area.
The local community keeps a watchful eye on it, and it’s always beautifully maintained and clean.
Restrooms
There’s also a drinking water fountain.

Tall, magnificent trees fill the park, with benches arranged in a circle around them — perfect for resting in the shade.

There’s even a Jizo statue here — a small stone Buddhist guardian deity, traditional in Japanese neighborhoods.

Locals say this Jizo watches over the safety of the neighborhood children.
Swings
A small combination playground
And a sandbox.
There’s also a wide open space where kids can play with balls and run around freely!

Why Izumigaoka Park Stands Out

Here’s the reason I’ve been dying to share this place!

Believe it or not, this park has its very own ‘sumo ring’ (dohyo)!!!

You won’t easily find another neighborhood park with a real sumo ring like this!

Kids can practice their best sumo wrestling moves right here — a fun way to experience a piece of Japanese culture!

It’s also conveniently close to Kumamoto City Zoo and Kengun Shopping Street, so be sure to drop by!
