2020.11.25

A SaruKuma writer visits “Saishoan Muraku,” a traditional Japanese sweets shop in Tatsuda, Kita Ward, Kumamoto City. Prices start from just 130 yen. We also cover family-friendly tips, access, and opening hours.
About the Shop
Hello there!
I’m Binako, a writer for SaruKuma,
and somehow I always end up craving sweets!
Today I’m introducing
“Saishoan Muraku”,
a lovely wagashi (traditional Japanese sweets) shop located in Tatsuda, Kita Ward, Kumamoto City.

I’d been craving traditional Japanese sweets,
so when I spotted this shop,
I felt like it was calling out to me, and I pulled right in. (laughs)

Convenient parking is available behind the shop. ^^

Inside, the display case is filled with so many beautiful wagashi β
it took me forever to decide!
Everything looked absolutely delicious!

Wakaayu β 130 yen
A charming sweet shaped like a young sweetfish, made of dorayaki-style pancake batter wrapped around sweet red bean paste. It was my first time seeing this delightful treat!

Musashi-maki β 650 yen
A castella sponge cake roll available in two flavors: rich kokuto (Japanese brown sugar) and earthy matcha green tea.

Yumetsukuri β 160 yen
Sazareishi β 160 yen
These sweets look as gorgeous as their poetic names sound!

There’s also a tempting selection of other snacks and treats available.

Beautifully arranged gift sets are available too β
perfect as souvenirs or omiyage to bring back home! (*Β΄Πο½)

Some of the wagashi are so elegantly crafted
that they sparkle like little jewels β guaranteed to impress whoever you bring them to.
And the best part? Everything is wonderfully affordable.
What a treat! ( *Β΄θΈο½)
Recommended Menu Items

First up, I tried the
Yuzu Daifuku β 170 yen.
This sweet was advertised right at the entrance,
and I just couldn’t resist trying it! lol

The bright, citrusy aroma of yuzu fills your senses,
balanced perfectly by a gentle, not-too-sweet flavor.
And here’s the surprise β the daifuku itself!
It’s not the typical chewy mochi texture; it literally melts away in your mouth!
The most luxurious melt-in-your-mouth experience!!!

Next up was the Chestnut Daifuku β 140 yen.

The fluffy, tender chestnut pairs beautifully with the melt-away daifuku,
and the dissolving mochi wraps around the sweetness of the chestnut and red bean paste,
creating perfect harmony in every bite!!
Absolutely incredible.

Then I tried the Ohagi β 140 yen (sweet rice ball coated in red bean paste).
Like everything else here, the sweetness was just right.
The whole red bean grains add a wonderful texture and substance,
making for a truly satisfying and delicious ohagi experience.
Everything was so delicious that I polished it all off in no time!
If you’re visiting Kumamoto, please drop by and try these wonderful Japanese sweets for yourself!
