When you think of Kumamoto,
you think of basashi (horse sashimi)… and karashi renkon!
This spicy mustard-stuffed lotus root is one of my all-time favorite foods βͺ
The moment I spotted the karashi renkon sign, I made a beeline for it ( *Β΄θΈο½)

The shopfront displays
karashi renkon in a variety of sizes β perfect for souvenirs, a sweet (well, spicy!) treat for yourself, or a snack to pair with drinks βͺ
Plus, the GoTo Travel regional coupons
are currently accepted here too ^^
Customers using the coupons get a discounted price β
it’s a friendly shop with great service!

The karashi renkon chips also come in a range of sizes,
making them ideal souvenir gifts to bring home for family or friends ( *Β΄θΈο½)
It’s so handy that they’re sold by gram weight or by the bag.
Recommended Menu

This time, I went with
Karashi Renkon β 1 pack for 324 yen!!
I love that it’s a single-serving size βͺ
And it comes pre-sliced, so it’s super easy to eat (*Β΄Πο½)

Each piece is generously sized β
an absolute dream for hungry eaters like me βͺ
That golden-yellow batter is downright divine
It looks so good I can’t wait any longer β let’s dig in!

That satisfying crunch β the lotus root is incredible!
And
the mustard kick is absolutely on point
That sharp, sinus-clearing wasabi-style heat from the karashi mustard is irresistible.
Combined with the crisp, crunchy lotus root,
once you start, you simply can’t stop.
The batter is thick and substantial β seriously delicious.
This is exactly my kind of food.
One pack honestly wasn’t enough…
Definitely stop by to grab some β whether as a souvenir or a treat for yourself!
The staff were genuinely warm and welcoming too!!
