Hello, fellow travelers! I love dogs more than three meals a day!

I’m Kurubushi, a 【SaruKuma】 writer—who, ironically, is also allergic to dogs. (Don’t worry, the love is worth it!)

Today, I’m thrilled to introduce a hidden gem in Kumamoto Prefecture that any dog lover absolutely must visit.

If you’re looking for the ultimate dog experience in Japan, head to Shisui in Kikuchi City:

Look closely—can you spot them?

Yes, the dogs are already photobombing the picture!

Fureai Higashi Bokujo is conveniently located along the scenic Kikuchi Green Road, making it an easy stop for travelers exploring central Kumamoto.

Walk through the large red sign marked “Entrance” (入口) to get inside.

And here’s the best part: admission is completely FREE!

Yes, you read that right—free!

At the entrance, you’ll find a guest notebook—simply write your name, address, and number of visitors, then use the alcohol sanitizer before going in.

There’s no staffed reception, but if you see one of the keepers nearby, a friendly “Konnichiwa!” (Hello!) is the perfect way to announce your arrival.

Although the sign asks visitors to get permission first, simply greeting one of the staff caring for the dogs is enough.

While entry is free, donations are warmly welcomed—and I happily contributed.

It’s a small token of appreciation that goes directly toward caring for these wonderful dogs.

There’s also a “Korokoro Room” on the property, although it’s currently not in use.

Restrooms are also available.

The traditionally styled building is called “Keshouan.”

Despite looking like a charming Japanese tea-sweets shop, it’s actually the toilet!

There’s a traditional Japanese-style squat toilet,

as well as a Western-style sit-down toilet—great news for international visitors!

Fun fact: two adorable white dogs serve as the unofficial “guards” of the Keshouan restroom!

And let me tell you, these little guys are SO friendly, you’ll fall in love instantly.

The other one was a bit shy and stayed put—too cute!

My daughter was over the moon to pet the dogs, but fair warning: the dogs may rush over with even more excitement than the kids, eagerly inviting you to play! Sensitive visitors might feel slightly overwhelmed at first.

That said, all the dogs we met were incredibly well-behaved—just let them sniff your hand for a polite hello, and you’ll have new furry friends in no time!

In short, this place is pure paradise for dog enthusiasts—an incredibly happy space packed with friendly pups.

The farm also operates as a breeder, with puppies for sale and adoption opportunities for those looking to give a dog a forever home.

Every single dog is unbelievably friendly—tails wagging, eyes shining, all eager to play with you!

The dogs literally competing for my attention—what a wonderful problem to have!

Each one is so soft and fluffy, you’ll feel completely healed by the experience.

You’ll find everything from tiny lap dogs to large breeds—a wonderful variety!

One particularly hilarious moment? Meet Sen-chan, the adventurous toy poodle.

She climbs up to the top of a tall pillar—apparently, this is a regular thing!

There’s even a sign that says “She can come down by herself.” Too funny!

It’s not just dogs—rabbits live here too!

You can enter their enclosure freely, but the moment we stepped in, all the rabbits hid—so unfortunately no photos. Their wild instincts are still strong, which is amazing!

There are also peacocks!

And ponies too! I was so distracted by the dogs that I only managed to photograph the pony’s behind—my apologies, dear pony! She was such a gentle, sweet horse.

Even cows live here too!

Free-range Ukokkei (Silkie) chickens roam the farm, and their premium eggs are available for purchase—a wonderful Japanese delicacy to try!

There’s an eat-in corner too! Starting in March, soft serve ice cream will be available—a delicious treat for visitors.

Two unique flavors: soft serve made with the farm’s own Ukokkei eggs, or a special version featuring an entire roasted Beni Haruka sweet potato—both for ¥400.

The menu also includes light meals using Ukokkei eggs and Taiwanese-style shaved ice.

The vending machine selection is impressive—even truck drivers passing through stop by during work breaks!

We visited just after a rainy day, so the dogs were a bit muddy—and naturally, my kids and I ended up muddy too! Adventure!

Travel tips for visiting this petting farm in Kumamoto:

・Wear clothes that can get dirty

・Bring rubber boots (some areas can be muddy)

・Pack a change of clothes

These are highly recommended!

Since this is a working farm with many animals, you can definitely smell the animals—it’s all part of the authentic experience!

In today’s world, with apartment living and allergies, it’s becoming harder for kids (and adults!) to interact with real animals.

Instead of just watching dogs and cats through the glass at a pet shop, why not try a hands-on, heartwarming experience?
