A Sarukuma writer visits “Cafe Shiki no Mori,” a charming cafe located in Suizenji, Chuo Ward, Kumamoto City. Price range: from 200 yen. We’ve also included family-friendly tips, access info, and opening hours.

Hello, travelers!
I’m Ayu Mama, a writer for “Sarukuma.”

Today I’d like to introduce a wonderful little spot in Suizenji, Chuo Ward:
Cafe Shiki no Mori (Cafe of the Four Seasons Forest).

Cafe Shiki no Mori is a stylish cafe located inside the new wing of the Kumamoto Prefectural Government Office.
As soon as you step inside the new wing,
your eyes are immediately drawn to this stylish cafe surrounded by warm wooden walls.

And don’t worry โ€” it’s not just for prefectural office employees. The cafe is open to the general public too!

Here are the opening hours โ†‘.
It’s an order-at-the-counter style cafe โ€” just place your order at the register and pick up your drinks and food.
There’s plenty of seating, including counter seats โ€” perfect for solo travelers who want to relax with a coffee.
There are also seats by the window near the entrance.
This area is bright, airy, and feels wonderfully open!
The menu offers tons of variety, and everything looks delicious!
It’s hard to choose just one!
And just look at those prices! Incredible value for money!
As expected of a prefectural office cafe โ€” truly a friend to the people!

Recommended Menu Items

Unfortunately, we arrived after lunchtime had ended,
so we enjoyed the cafe menu instead.
Tempted by the offer of “How about a takeaway?”,
I ordered the most popular item on the menu โ€” a Cafe Latte for just 200 yen.

This generous serving for only 200 yen!
What an amazing deal!!!
Right next to Cafe Shiki no Mori, there’s a grand staircase that leads up to a Rooftop Garden on the second floor โ€” and that’s where we decided to enjoy our drinks!
Here’s where the Rooftop Garden is located on the building map โ†‘
Despite being called a “rooftop” garden, it’s actually located on the second floor.
There’s a spacious wooden deck area lined with benches,
and a lush green area surrounded by lots of trees โ€” two distinct spaces to enjoy.
There’s also a drinking fountain, making it a great spot for families with children to relax together.

It’s such a peaceful place to spend time outdoors โ€”
so tranquil that you might forget you’re inside a government office building.
A truly soothing hidden gem in the heart of Kumamoto City.

If you’re visiting the famous ginkgo tree-lined promenade at the Kumamoto Prefectural Office (which we introduced in our previous article),
we highly recommend stopping by Cafe Shiki no Mori as well!
