About the Shop

Hello travelers! It’s Binako, your SaruKuma writer — and yes, I still haven’t gotten around to picking up that bicycle for my kid!

Today I’m taking you to Tangoya Jonan (お菓子の反後屋 城南店), a delightful local sweets shop tucked away in Senmachi, Jonan-machi, Minami Ward, Kumamoto City.

As you might guess — yes, I was completely lured in by the cream puff banner outside!

Convenient parking is available right next to the shop.

The interior is bright and tidy, offering a lovely mix of Western-style cakes (yogashi) and traditional Japanese sweets (wagashi) — a perfect introduction to Japan’s dessert culture.

Most cakes are priced around just 270 yen each — wonderfully budget-friendly!

Here’s the star of the show — the irresistibly creamy Cream Puff (Shu Cream) — 130 yen.

And just look at this gorgeous treat — perfect as a special gift:
Amande Chocolat — 1,836 yen

A wide variety of traditional Japanese sweets are also on offer.

Time to dig in! The treats came beautifully wrapped with a ribbon — almost too pretty to open. But of course, open it I did!

First up:
Cream Puff (Shu Cream) — 130 yen
A cute, perfectly round little dome topped with a crisp, crumbly cookie crust.

The crunchy cookie top contrasts wonderfully with the soft, moist choux pastry, and the velvety custard inside is absolutely divine.

And that custard —
bursting with rich, eggy flavor!
It’s old-school custard at its finest, and exactly the kind I love.

Next, I tried the:
Cheesecake — 270 yen

So moist and inviting!

It melts away in your mouth in the most blissful way — pure happiness in cheesecake form…

That glossy glaze on top adds another layer of flavor, and the crisp tart base underneath gives a wonderful textural contrast. Beautifully balanced sweetness, multiple textures, and rich taste — it’s seriously delicious.

The shop staff were so kind and welcoming that I almost overstayed my visit chatting with them!
