About This Spot
Hello travelers!
This is Mikan, a writer for [Sarukuma]
Today we’re introducing
“Michi-no-Eki Tsujunkyo“,
located in Nagahara, Yamato Town, Kamimashiki District, Kumamoto Prefecture.

This is the flagship roadside station of Yamato Town, famous for the historic Tsujunkyo Aqueduct Bridge!

There’s plenty of parking both in front of the station and on the upper level!
However, on this particular weekend visit, the lots were nearly full.
It really showed how popular this tourist destination is.
If you’re visiting on a weekend, we highly recommend arriving early!
After waiting and waiting and waiting,
we finally found a spot! (haha)

There’s plenty of open space for kids to run around and play,
plus seating areas where parents can relax and rest!
Not pictured here, but there are also lots of benches available!

For photography enthusiasts, you can capture not just the Tsujunkyo Aqueduct itself,
but also the picturesque path leading up to it.
The scenery has such a wonderful traditional atmosphere!

If your timing is right,
you can witness the spectacular water release from the aqueduct!!!
This is what most visitors come to see!
Of course, everyone wants to see the famous water discharge in action ~
As you can tell from the photo, it draws huge crowds! (haha)
(*Currently, the water release happens once a day for 15 minutes starting at 1:00 PM.
A water release calendar is available on the official website, so check before your visit.)

γ»Yabe Tea (local green tea) β 350 yen
This time, we tried Vanilla (350 yen) and Yabe Tea (350 yen).
We really wanted the Mixed flavor, but it was sold out.
It must be the most popular choice… Mixed flavor, we’ll be back for you!

Here are our Vanilla and Yabe Tea!
Ordering both gives you a sort of DIY mixed experience! (haha)
Still thinking about that mixed flavor though! (haha)

Let’s start with the Yabe Tea flavor.
Wow, this is TEA! Pure, TEA!
Genuine green tea. That’s the best way to describe it.
The aroma and rich flavor of authentic green tea fills your mouth completely.
This is a sophisticated, grown-up flavor ~

Next up, the Vanilla.
As expected, classic vanilla offers a traditional, familiar taste.
I found it to be a very light and refreshing vanilla.
Since I couldn’t get the Mixed flavor,
I created my own DIY mixed version with these two, and the result was…
The mixed combination is absolutely delicious!! (haha)
The light vanilla mellows the strong tea flavor of the Yabe Tea
while preserving its delicate green tea aroma.
That’s the magic role of the refreshing vanilla.
These two flavors pair together perfectly.
So, when you visit Michi-no-Eki Tsujunkyo,
we definitely recommend arriving early!
Park your car at a leisurely pace, and
be sure to grab the Mixed flavor before it sells out! (haha)

Right now, you can also take photos with this giant Kumamon (Kumamoto’s beloved bear mascot) statue!
Come to Michi-no-Eki Tsujunkyo to admire the historic Tsujunkyo Aqueduct and treat yourself to wonderful Yabe tea sweets.
Make it part of your perfect Yamato Town adventure!
