Introducing Sansan Gyoza
Hello, fellow travelers!
This is Binako, a Sarukuma writer
struggling to keep up with Kumamoto’s summer heat.
Today I’m excited to introduce a unique spot located in
Hachioji-cho, Chuo-ku, Kumamoto City:
“Sansan Gyoza”!

You may have already heard the buzz about this place…
As you can see, it’s a fully self-service, unmanned gyoza shop — a fascinating slice of modern Japanese retail culture!
Open 24 hours a day, you can pop in for delicious dumplings
“anytime, day or night” — perfect for travelers with unpredictable schedules.

There’s parking for two cars right out front.

Now let’s step inside.
There’s something thrilling about shopping at an unmanned store — a uniquely Japanese experience!

The freezer inside is packed with frozen gyoza.
There’s just one product on offer: a pack of 32 dumplings for ¥1,000 (tax included).
Each pack comes with one complimentary ice pack to keep your gyoza cool on the way home.

Instructions for purchasing are clearly posted on the wall —
be sure to read them carefully before buying.

On the table, you’ll find
a special house-made gyoza dipping sauce for ¥200 (tax included).
Don’t miss this when you grab your dumplings!

Once you’ve picked up your gyoza and sauce, it’s time to pay.
If you’re paying cash, simply drop your money into the payment box.
PayPay is also accepted, so don’t worry if you’re cashless — perfect for international visitors using mobile payment apps!
Sansan Gyoza Recommended Menu

This time I picked up:
・1 pack of gyoza (32 pieces)
・Special gyoza dipping sauce
For those of us who aren’t great at pan-frying gyoza,
the package conveniently includes step-by-step cooking instructions on the back.

I had wanted to try arranging them in that fancy circular pattern,
but since I’d never done it before, I cooked them my usual way.
Still, they came out beautifully golden and crispy!

Time to dig in with that special dipping sauce.

That crispy seared bottom made me think “Wow, nice job, me!”
The wrapper is wonderfully chewy and tender.
Combined with the juicy, savory pork filling
and the satisfying crunch of fresh vegetables — absolutely delicious.
Even my kids couldn’t stop popping them into their mouths.

Whether it’s daytime, morning, or late at night — anytime works!
