About the Restaurant

Hello, fellow travelers! It’s Rennyu here (◍•ᴗ•◍)

Today I’m excited to introduce you to
“Kanshin Shokudo”,
located in Sannenzaka, Chuo-ku, Kumamoto City.

This charming spot evolved from a popular food stall that used to sell rice porridge bento boxes next to Swiss on Kamitori Shopping Street. Now it has its own permanent home! ♪

~An Exotic, Stylish Interior~

The space features plenty of counter seating,
making it perfectly comfortable for solo travelers!

Of course, there are table seats too! ♪

It’s an order-first system, but you can reserve your seat
right when you walk in using these adorable little tokens (。•̀ᴗ-)✧

The sign reads “Please use the pinecone,” which is just
the cutest thing ever ( ꈍᴗꈍ)♪

Then place your order at the back of the shop ♪

On the front left, you’ll find sweets and takeout items.

Takeout-only orders are also welcome! ♪

Next to the register, you’ll spot a delicious lineup of piroshki and other treats ♪And here’s a peek at the menu.

Highlights include the Rice Porridge (Okayu) Set for ¥900
and the Mala Tantanmen Set for ¥1,200, among others.

For families, children’s chairs and tableware are available upon request ( ꈍᴗꈍ)

The staff noticed me holding my child from the kitchen
and quickly brought everything we needed ☆

Children’s tableware is provided too.

Recommended Menu

This time, I went with the Rice Porridge Set (¥900).

For my main, I chose the Buddhist-style (Shojin) Mapo Tofu ✧◝(⁰▿⁰)◜✧
For an extra ¥150, I added the tea of the day (jasmine tea).

The mapo tofu had just the right amount of spice and was absolutely delicious!

Even though it’s labeled as “shojin” (Buddhist vegetarian cuisine),
the “ground meat” turned out to be soy meat — what a surprise!

There was no soy aftertaste at all — the texture and flavor were remarkably close to real ground meat.

The rice porridge has a gentle, comforting flavor with a beautifully rich dashi broth.

Despite being porridge, the meal left me completely satisfied and full.

Mid-meal, my child knocked my chopsticks off the table,
and a staff member rushed over with a fresh pair right away.

Drinking water comes as self-serve lemon water,
with both room-temperature and ice-cold options ♪

When you’re done, simply return your tray to the designated counter.

Thank you for the wonderful meal! ☺️

I had wondered if it might be tricky to visit with kids, but with chairs and tableware
ready for little ones, it instantly felt very welcoming (*´ω`*)

It’s a great spot where families with children and vegan diners can all enjoy a meal together! ♪
