Welcome to Kaho Umezono
Hello, fellow travelers!
This is Binako, your SaruKuma writer, currently catching up on some recorded Japanese mystery dramas at home.
Today, I’m taking you to a delightful traditional Japanese sweets shop located in Kawashiri, Minami-ku, Kumamoto City:
“Kaho Umezono” (θθ ζ’
ε).

The shop sits right along the road, so it’s easy to drive past β keep your eyes peeled while driving carefully!

You can park right in front of the shop β super convenient!
Step inside, and you’ll be greeted by an incredible variety of traditional wagashi (Japanese sweets)!

Karinto Manju (deep-fried sweet bun) β 130 yen each
Value-pack assortment (6 pieces) β 600 yen

They also have a delightful
Chestnut Pie (with shibukawa-ni candied chestnuts) β 324 yen!

And there’s a wonderful selection of individually-sold wagashi to explore!

Amabie Dorayaki (sweet bean pancake) β 162 yen
Look β it’s stamped with Amabie, the legendary Japanese mermaid-like yokai believed to ward off epidemics!

Wagashi Assortment Box β 1,555 yen
A perfect souvenir or gift to bring home!

By the way,
each wagashi comes with a thoughtful description,
making it easy for first-timers to choose with confidence!
Recommended Treats to Try

Here’s what I picked up to try!

Soba Manju (buckwheat sweet bun) β 108 yen
I expected a crispy texture,
but it was incredibly chewy and mochi-like!

And the inside is generously packed with smooth red bean paste (anko)!

The sweetness is perfectly balanced
and pairs beautifully with a cup of green tea.
Absolutely delicious!

Nostalgic Wagashi β 108 yen
Round and beautiful, just like a full moon

Light and refreshing with just a hint of sweetness!
The dough is soft and easy to enjoy.

I was instantly drawn in by the gorgeous packaging on this one!

So excited!
Pop it open!

It feels like a treat straight out of a Japanese fairy tale!

So plump and adorable!

There’s a whole chestnut hidden inside!
The steamed yokan (sweet bean jelly) is wonderfully smooth,
and the chestnut adds a fluffy, fragrant finish β simply divine!
