📌 What You’ll Learn in This Article
A SaruKuma writer visits and reports on “Ide Seika,” a traditional Japanese sweets shop in Kokubu, Chuo Ward, Kumamoto City. Price range: from 230 yen. We’ve also covered family-friendly tips, access, and opening hours.

About the Shop

Hello there!

I’m Binako, a SaruKuma writer who’s currently dreaming of getting a washer-dryer combo!

Today I’m introducing Ide Seika, located in Kokubu, Chuo Ward, Kumamoto City, Kumamoto Prefecture.

“Ide Seika”

It’s a traditional, old-fashioned wagashi (Japanese sweets) shop.

For parking, with Ide Seika on your left, walk straight along the riverside to find Izumi 1-chome Parking Lot.

Look for the signboard and park there.

Inside the shop, the display case is filled with beautifully arranged gift sets.

On top of the display case, you’ll find:
Strawberry Daifuku — 230 yen (mochi rice cake stuffed with sweet bean paste and fresh strawberry)
Monaka — 119 yen (crisp wafer with red bean filling)
Cheese Manju — 140 yen
Castella Manju — 152 yen

Dorayaki — 140 yen (pancake-style sandwich with red bean paste)
Castella — 162 yen (Japanese-style sponge cake)
Chestnut Dorayaki — 173 yen
The selection of traditional Japanese sweets is wonderfully extensive.

You can also find Ikinari Dango — 130 yen, a famous Kumamoto specialty made with sweet potato and red bean paste wrapped in a chewy dough.
Since stock arrives throughout the day, visiting after 12 noon might give you the best selection!

Toward the back, you’ll also discover Soramame (Broad Bean) Sweets — 350 yen.

They come in three flavors: Ginger Soramame / Brown Sugar Soramame / Fried Soramame.

Recommended Menu Items

This time I tried the:
Dorayaki
Cheese Manju
Castella Manju

First up, the Castella Manju — apparently one of the shop’s signature recommendations.

That perfectly round shape is just adorable.

The melt-in-your-mouth moist white bean paste pairs beautifully with the soft outer dough, with just the right level of sweetness. Enjoyed alongside a cup of hot Japanese tea, it’s an absolute must-try delicacy.

Next up, another shop favorite: the Cheese Manju.

With cheese on top of the manju as well, this is truly a cheese-lover’s dream manju.

Inside, you’ll find white bean paste and cheese together, creating a delightful sweet-and-salty harmony that never gets old. Honestly, you could eat these forever.

Finally, I tried the dorayaki.

That fluffy, pillowy pancake batter looks irresistible.

This is the kind of dorayaki that would make even Doraemon (Japan’s beloved cartoon cat who’s famous for loving dorayaki) flip with delight!

The gentle sweetness of the soft pancake pairs perfectly with the well-balanced sweet bean paste — every bite releases more umami flavor that fills your mouth.

With such a wide variety of traditional Japanese sweets to choose from, why not stop by for a relaxing tea break during your travels?
