About the Bakery

Hello there!

I’m Binako, a writer for Sarukuma,
famous among my friends for spamming so many “lol” emojis in our LINE chats
that Pokémon could probably live in the grass I’ve grown!

Today I’m introducing a wonderful spot located in
Obiyama, Chuo Ward, Kumamoto City:
“Beckerei Bretzen”.

This charming bakery is tucked away in a quiet residential neighborhood, and
they also host bread-making classes here,
which is fantastic if you’re interested in learning the craft of authentic German baking!

The parking lot in front of the shop fits about two cars,
so please park close to one side to make room for other customers!

When I arrived, fresh breads were still being lined up on the shelves.
I was told that their popular rye breads come out around 11:00 AM.

If you’re hoping to grab some authentic German rye bread,
aim to visit just after 11:00!!

Freshly baked breads were marked with a special “just baked” sign — such a nice touch! ^^

Bretzen — 160 yen

Semmel — 140 yen
Camembert Semmel — 180 yen

These German breads are absolutely packed with flavor,
so it’s tempting to stock up for breakfast or as a daily staple (*´Д`)

Grapefruit Chiffon Cake — 170 yen per slice

Besides bread, they also have a lovely selection of cakes ♪
A perfect treat for kids, too!

Cheesecake and chocolate cake are on the menu as well.

There are tables and chairs inside the shop,
so you can sit down and enjoy a quick bite right there.

The owner cheerfully told me that local kids often pop in to buy bread
and stay to eat it on the spot — such a warm, welcoming atmosphere ^^

Recommended Menu

Here’s the lineup of breads I picked up today.

Pumpkin Zopf — 160 yen

The plump pumpkin seeds piled generously on top instantly catch your eye.

The seeds add a delightful crunch,
and they pair beautifully with the firm texture of the bread —
the more you chew, the more the natural flavors come through. Truly addictive!

Knopf — 160 yen

Topped with a generous sprinkle of cheese,
the gentle saltiness and toasty cheese aroma are simply divine.

Perfect for breakfast or lunch —
its rich, flavorful character is sure to win over kids, too ♪

This bread is also
simple yet seriously delicious — the salt is perfectly balanced.

Because it’s a hard-style bread, you can really savor every bite,
making it incredibly satisfying.

The owner kindly explained the story behind each bread —
such a friendly and welcoming experience ^^

If you’re in Kumamoto, definitely make a stop here — you won’t regret it!
