About Hiroshima-Style Okonomiyaki Mabo

Hello travelers! This is Gussan, your Sarukuma writer.
Today I’m finally introducing one of my long-time favorite local hangouts that I’ve somehow never written about until now.
It’s Hiroshima-Style Okonomiyaki Mabo Kumamoto, located in Shin-oe, Chuo Ward, Kumamoto City.
This is a place I’d highly recommend to fellow okonomiyaki and udon lovers like myself.First, a quick note about parking. There’s a parking area right next to the restaurant, but you can also use the lot on the right as you go further in.
It might feel confusing at first about where exactly to park, but really, anywhere is fine.
There’s apparently additional parking behind the building too.
A friendly tortoise statue greets you at the entrance. I’ve been here many times, but I never noticed the tortoise until I looked back at these photos! From now on, I’ll definitely give him a respectful little bow each visit. (laugh)
Inside, there are four two-person tables arranged face to face. Families can easily push tables together to sit comfortably as a group.
Even the Pikachu plushies are wearing masks to welcome you!
You can also enjoy a casual drink here, with options like Pig’s Trotters (Tonsoku) for 300 yen, paired with a Highball (400 yen) or Lemon Sour (400 yen).
Delicious!
They also serve domestic beef tendon stew (500 yen), beef tendon teppan-yaki (500 yen), and beef tendon omelet (600 yen).
Mabo is run by a friendly husband-and-wife team.
With several schools nearby, you’ll often see high school and university students stopping by too.
For those who love generous mayonnaise (like me!), it’s reassuring to find mayo right on the table. (laugh)
And the sauce? It’s Otafuku — the absolute go-to brand trusted by every okonomiyaki devotee!

Recommended Menu at Hiroshima-Style Okonomiyaki Mabo

Here’s a look at Mabo’s menu.
・Niku-Tama Soba (pork & egg with soba noodles): 700 yen
・Niku-Tama Udon (pork & egg with udon noodles): 700 yen
・Yakisoba (fried noodles): 550 yen
・Omu-Soba (omelet-wrapped yakisoba): 700 yen
You can customize the noodle portion for your okonomiyaki: One-and-a-Half (1.5 servings, +100 yen) or Double (2 servings, +200 yen), which is great for sharing with kids.
There’s even a Small (0.5 servings, 600 yen) option perfect for moms and little ones with smaller appetites, plus a Family Set (1,150 yen).
They also offer teppan-yaki dishes, rice bowls, and small appetizers.
The Garlic Yakimeshi (garlic fried rice) sounds tempting too!
There’s a soft drink menu too.
And here’s my go-to: the Niku-Tama Udon Okonomiyaki (700 yen).
I always upgrade to the One-and-a-Half noodle portion (+100 yen), but honestly, even the regular size is impressively large.
It arrives steaming hot on a huge plate that must be around 30 cm in diameter.
Thanks to the udon noodles, it’s seriously filling. The chewy, springy noodles soak up the sauce and mayo beautifully, and the bonito flakes on top add the perfect savory accent.
This is the dish that keeps me coming back to Mabo again and again.
This time, I tried the Omu-Soba (700 yen) for the very first time.
The yakisoba uses thin noodles and was packed with cabbage and bean sprouts.
Crispy fresh veggies, a soft-set egg, and that signature Otafuku sauce with mayo — Omu-Soba is amazing too!
Now I’ll be torn between the Niku-Tama Udon and the Omu-Soba every time I visit. (laugh)
Mabo also offers takeout for okonomiyaki and yakisoba (a container fee of 20–40 yen applies to all takeout orders).
They even have a drive-thru option, so you can pick up freshly grilled okonomiyaki without leaving your car — a wonderful convenience for families with little ones.
