Inside 清水児童館: The Surprisingly Spacious Children’s Hall in Kumamoto’s Kita-ku
2026.04.26

A SaruKuma writer visited 清水児童館 in Kita-ku, Kumamoto City in person and filed this firsthand report. Inside: what to expect, how to get there, parking tips, facility highlights, and opening hours — everything families need before the visit.
Finding Your Way: Parking & Check-In at 清水児童館
Hello! This is Asukarando, a writer for SaruKuma.
Today we’re visiting 清水児童館 — a free community children’s center (jidōkan) in Kita-ku (North Ward), Kumamoto City. Jidōkan are government-run play facilities open to families with young children at no charge, and this one is particularly well-loved by local parents.
清水児童館 is located inside the Shimizu Community Development Center (まちづくりセンター) — a multi-purpose civic building run by Kita-ku Ward Office.
There is a parking lot visible at the front entrance — but this is reserved for visitors to the civic office windows. For the children’s hall, you’ll need to use the parking in the rear.
This is the rear parking lot designated for 清水児童館 visitors. From the rear entrance, pass through the community center building — directional signs will guide you the rest of the way.
You’ve arrived at 清水児童館! The facility is open to preschoolers and their guardians, as well as children up through elementary school age — great news for families with kids of different ages.
Remember to remove your shoes at the entrance and place them in the shoe lockers before heading to the reception desk. Open hours are 9:00–17:00 (last check-in at 16:45).
Sign in at the reception log book. First-time visitors will need to fill out a brief registration card — a standard procedure at Japanese community facilities.
The restroom is right next to the reception desk and includes child-sized toilet fixtures — very handy for toddlers in the middle of toilet training.
A dedicated diaper changing station is available, complete with a privacy curtain and a full baby changing table. Families with infants can visit with confidence.
Inside the Hall: Toys, Slides & a Reading Corner
The standout feature here is the sheer size of the main hall. The ceiling soars overhead, and the open floor space is genuinely impressive — children have room to run, explore, and truly let loose.
A toy lending corner lets children borrow and play with a wide range of equipment. Staff sanitize all toys regularly — a thoughtful touch for health-conscious parents.
Ride-on toys line the hall in abundance. With this much floor space, kids can zoom around to their hearts’ content.
This section has wheeless rocking toys — the boat-shaped rocker swaying gently like a cradle was a particular favourite with the little ones.
Two different slides are available, sized for different ages — younger children and more confident older kids can each find one that suits them.
The taller of the two slides offers a bit more of a thrill — older children seemed to love the extra height.
A large soft foam mat gives children a cushioned surface for jumping, rolling, and sprawling — they found all sorts of creative ways to enjoy it.
A toy playhouse is set up for imaginative pretend play — perfect for little ones who love playing house (known in Japan as omamagoto).
But there’s more than just play equipment — the facility also has a dedicated reading room!
Books cannot be taken home, but children and parents can browse freely and settle in for a quiet storytime together — a lovely change of pace from all that running around.
Outside & Special Programs: Even More Fun Awaits
On the day of our visit, a staff member called out cheerfully to gather the children — it was time for “Kirakira Time” (きらきらタイム), a special morning activity session!
The session featured seasonal songs and interactive parent-child movement games — a warm, joyful experience for everyone in the room.
☆ Kirakira Time ☆ — a free morning activity with songs and parent-child play, held every Thursday and Friday at 11:00 (approx. 20 minutes). Check-in runs from 10:15 to 10:45, or until capacity is reached.
Note: The center also offers a variety of other activities that require advance registration. Check the official website for schedules and sign-up details before your visit.
Another community initiative here is PaoPao Club — a parent-led group where members organize events and activities together. The warm community spirit was palpable throughout our visit.
And there’s still more to explore — next up is the outdoor playground!
Yes — there’s also an outdoor playground! Our little one bolted straight outside the moment she spotted it.
A Tarzan-style rope swing keeps the adventure going outdoors — kids seemed absolutely delighted by it.
A round dome-shaped jungle gym offers climbing fun for kids of all ages.
The outdoor slide is on the taller side — a satisfying challenge that older children seemed to relish.
There’s even a horizontal bar (tetsubō) — great for kids who are practicing gymnastics or just want to hang around.
Using the outdoor area also requires a quick check-in at the front desk. Like the indoor hall, it is open to children up through elementary school age.
One more lovely detail: children celebrating a birthday receive a personalized birthday card as a gift from the staff — a small but heartwarming touch.
Filled with warmth, activities, and genuine community spirit, 清水児童館 is a wonderful outing for any family visiting Kumamoto. If you’re traveling with young children and looking for a place where local families truly gather, this is it.
