Introducing Goshiki no Sato

Hello there! I’m Aikero, a writer for Sarukuma.

Today I’m excited to introduce you to a fantastic spot in Matsuyama-machi, Uto City:
Goshiki no Sato (五色ノ郷).
Ever since my very first visit, this has become one of those places I find myself returning to again and again — not super often, but consistently!
And no matter when I go, the place is always packed!
I see lots of older locals there too, so I’m guessing word of mouth is doing its magic.

Reservations are accepted for groups of 5 or more.
Since the restaurant fills up fast, I always make sure to arrive 10–15 minutes early! (Maybe a bit too early, ha!)
This time I arrived 10 minutes ahead and was the second group seated — by just past noon, the place was completely full.
The restaurant sits along Prefectural Route 14.
The easiest way to find it: head past Uto City Mall in the direction of Uki City, and keep an eye out!
Look for the signboard — it’s easy to drive right past if you’re not paying attention.

There are also a couple of other Sarukuma-recommended spots nearby that are worth checking out!

Have you tried the legendary cream bread yet?

Machi Pan Lab Uto Branch (Matsuyama-machi, Uto City) — A neighborhood bakery famous for legendary cream bread, with new flavors every month

A storybook-like interior and adorable plates that’ll make your heart skip — the Harapeko-san lunch!

cafe mariquita (Matsuyama-machi, Uto City) — The long-awaited reopening of this charming grown-up hideaway

Uto really is full of delicious places to eat!
There are still so many spots on my list to try.
If you’re curious, search “Uto” on the Sarukuma blog for more recommendations.

Here’s the parking area.
It doesn’t have a ton of spaces, so if you’re coming as a group, carpooling is a smart move!
As you can see from the izakaya lanterns out front, this place transforms into a lively izakaya at night!
There’s just something extra exciting about a lunch served by a great izakaya, isn’t there?
Inside, you’ll find counter seating and table seating.
There are also semi-private tatami rooms and horigotatsu (sunken-floor) seating,
plus open tatami areas as well.
They have children’s chairs available too, which makes it super welcoming for families!
When I visited (early November), they had a special oyster menu!
I’m not sure how long it’ll run, so if you’re an oyster fan, I recommend calling ahead to check.

Goshiki no Sato Recommended Menu

I was torn because I absolutely love the beef hormone teppanyaki I had on a previous visit, but this time I went for my first ever Yama no Zen!
It seemed like the perfect option to share with my child.
The sashimi was thick-cut, wonderfully firm, and absolutely delicious!
Two pieces each of chicken karaage and chicken nanban.
The small side dishes were mozuku seaweed, satsumaage (fried fish cake), and tofu with nameko mushroom ankake sauce.
And the miso soup was absolutely loaded with ingredients! And no, I’m not making it look bigger — the chicken really is generous in size!
The nanban pieces were just as substantial.

The seasoning is bold and full-flavored!
Everything pairs so well with rice that if you’re hungry, I’d definitely recommend the large rice portion.
Chawanmushi is always a happy surprise!
There’s something so comforting about it.
It’s silky smooth with a delicate flavor, and inside you’ll find shiitake mushrooms, ginkgo nuts, and more. The seasonal gelato of the day was yuzu (Japanese citrus)!
It’s the perfect refreshing finish to a hearty meal.
Given how full you’ll be by the end, this portion size is just right!
Hot tea is available at the counter — feel free to help yourself!
A warm sip to wrap things up — gochisousama deshita (thanks for the meal)!

I’ve also been once for a course dinner in the evening, and it was absolutely fantastic!
Goshiki no Sato shares dinner reservation availability on their Instagram Stories.
Since it’s just as popular for dinner as it is for lunch, I highly recommend booking ahead when your group size allows!
It’s such a wonderful spot — please give it a try if you’re in the area!
