Today I’m excited to introduce you to
Shinmachi, Chuo Ward, Kumamoto City, Kumamoto Prefecture, where you’ll find
“Latte Maru”.
This beautifully renovated two-story traditional Japanese house (kominka) blends seamlessly into the historic streets of Shinmachi.
Look for the adorable paper lantern (chochin) displaying the shop’s logo – it’s the perfect landmark!
The first floor offers counter and table seating, while the second floor features a spacious traditional tatami room (zashiki) where you can relax and unwind.
Solo travelers will feel right at home here!
During my visit, I noticed several customers enjoying their time alone with no awkwardness at all.
Heading upstairs, you’ll find a roomy tatami space – a great spot for families traveling with children.
Lunch is served from 11:00 to 14:30.
The dishes are vibrantly colorful and beautifully crafted – clearly the work of a passionate chef!
The menu features both rice-based dishes and sandwich options.
And here’s a delightful bonus – the price includes a set drink!
The menu also rotates seasonally, so there’s always something new to discover ♪

I dropped by during cafe hours.
As you’d expect from the shop’s name, the latte selection is impressive ♪
My must-tries were the “Cafe Latte” and the
signature firm-textured “Shinmachi Pudding”!
The set was 780 yen.

Since latte is literally part of the shop’s name,
it’s no surprise that nearly everyone orders one – and
it was AMAZINGLY delicious!!!!!
Honestly, the best latte I’ve ever had in my life!!!
The milk is rich yet wonderfully smooth, and the espresso shines through beautifully ☆☆☆

I’m one of those people who believes a true “latte” must let the espresso shine through (haha),
and Latte Maru’s latte completely blew me away!
If you only try one thing here, make it this – you owe it to yourself to taste the real deal!

The owner is a trained barista who spent years working at one of Kumamoto’s most renowned cafes
and even studied the craft in Seattle, the birthplace of cafe latte culture. You can truly taste the love and dedication poured into every cup ♪
And then there’s the
legendary “Shinmachi Pudding” –
which also blew my expectations away!
Oh. My. Goodness. SO good!!

Old-fashioned firm-style Japanese pudding (purin) has been making a comeback lately,
and I’ve sampled quite a few in the past year, but
this one is hands-down the BEST pudding I’ve had in years ☆☆☆
It’s not too firm, but has just the right satisfying texture,
yet still smooth, creamy, and incredibly rich!!

I’ve officially found my favorite latte-and-pudding spot in Kumamoto ♪
Even better, lunch dishes, drinks, and desserts are all available for takeout – perfect if you’d like to grab something to enjoy back at your hotel or as an edible souvenir!

By night, the cafe transforms into something completely different – an atmospheric kominka-style izakaya (Japanese gastropub).
The thoughtful selection of tableware and glassware adds another layer of charm.
Every detail reflects the owner’s passion – a truly special experience worth savoring.

If you only have time for one thing, come for the latte first…
