About Tofu-dokoro Makoto-ya
Hi everyone! It’s Suno, your friendly writer here at Sarukuma.
Today I’m taking you to a delightful little spot in Kamebamachi, Amakusa City β
Tofu-dokoro Makoto-ya.
Tucked just off Route 324 near the Amakusa Seto Ohashi Bridge, it’s an easy stop on any Amakusa road trip.
Look for the bright white noren curtain framed by a vivid green storefront β you can’t miss it! βͺ
There’s a private parking lot right next to the shop, so it’s stress-free even for first-time visitors.
Step inside and the first thing that catches your eye is a beautifully illustrated poster of their soy-milk soft serve. Just looking at it makes your mouth water!β‘

It was a cold, rainy day during my visit so I held back this time β but next trip, that soft serve is mine! βͺ
Looking around the shop, I was struck by how every single product was displayed so neatly and thoughtfully.
Easy to see, easy to choose β small details that make a big difference!
Names like “Yasashii Kinu” (Gentle Silken) and “Mainichi Momen” (Everyday Cotton) are charming and full of love for tofu-making.
Kumiage Yuba (freshly scooped tofu skin) Β₯430
Nama Yuba (raw tofu skin) Β₯430
Tofu-dokoro Makoto-ya has been crafting tofu since 1950 (Showa 25) β over 70 years of tradition beloved by the local community.
It’s a favorite for home cooking, of course, but plenty of customers also drive in from outside the prefecture just to grab souvenirs.
They also sell yuzu-kosho β a fragrant citrus-chili paste β made with natural Amakusa sea salt.
It’s a staple in our kitchen at home! Amazing in hot pot, but also surprisingly perfect with pasta or sashimi.
Nigari Atsuage (thick fried tofu) Β₯320
Handmade Ganmodoki (tofu fritter) Β₯120
What’s wonderfully unexpected: Makoto-ya is more than a tofu shop. There’s a corner for organic vegetables, premium kinako (roasted soybean flour), and carefully selected miso and soy sauces too!
All Tofu-dokoro Makoto-ya products are made with domestic Japanese soybeans and domestic rice oil.
Safe, wholesome, and delicious β guaranteed!

The star of the show: “Amakusa Oboro” Β₯320
On the day of my visit, the shop was packed with out-of-prefecture customers.
One traveler had come all the way from Chiba β over 1,000 km away β just for this tofu!
The name “Amakusa” really is making waves nationwide.
So what makes “Amakusa Oboro” so special?
Oboro tofu is a soft, freshly gathered tofu that’s never rinsed in cold water β preserving its natural creaminess and rich soybean flavor.
I shared a portion with my mom, and we were both blown away!
“You said to eat it without soy sauce or anything, and honestly I was skeptical β would it have any flavor at all? But wow, you really don’t need a single thing. No condiments, no toppings, just pure tofu. So smooth, so rich, it’s almost like dessert! Why didn’t we buy more?!” she rattled off in one breath. Haha.
Tourists, please give it a try βͺ
By the kids’ request, we also picked up the Soy Milk Pudding Β₯210
One plain and one black sesame.
You can almost see how silky-smooth they are even before tasting, right?
There’s even a small eat-in corner inside the shop β perfect for travelers and impatient little ones who can’t wait to dig in!
A lifesaver for hungry kids! Haha.
“It’s so smooth and yummy!” β every last bite gone.
Only a tofu shop could pull off pudding this elegant: lightly sweet, simple, and so easy to enjoy you’ll want a second (or third) helping!
Don’t underestimate a humble tofu shop.
From their award-winning Amakusa Oboro to a beautiful spread of artisan products, Tofu-dokoro Makoto-ya is a must-visit when you’re exploring Amakusa in Kumamoto Prefecture!
