📌 What You’ll Learn in This Article
A Sarukuma writer visits “Turlatta,” a charming onigiri (rice ball) shop in Magoshiro, Minami-ku, Kumamoto City. Price range: from 250 yen. We also cover family-friendly tips, access, and opening hours.

Introducing Turlatta

Hello travelers! I’m Aikero, a writer for [Sarukuma].

Today I’m sharing one of my favorite local gems in Magoshiro, Minami-ku, Kumamoto City:
[Turlatta]

It’s right near [La vigne], the lovely bakery we’ve featured before, and [Sunabara Minami Park].
You’ll find the shop directly across from Akita Junior High School.

Here’s a fun twist — what looks like a simple onigiri shop is actually combined with a hair salon, marked by an adorable green door! Even better, free childcare is offered every Tuesday — a real lifesaver for parents with young kids (^○^)
Look for the flag with “omusubi” (rice balls) written on it — it makes the shop easy to spot!♪Parking is available both in front of and beside the shop.
Place your order and pick up your food at this cute little window (^^)/
The shop’s commitment to high-quality, locally sourced ingredients really shines through.
(They use “Pikamaru” rice — the name alone sounds delicious!)

The single-filling onigiri are 250 to 400 yen, with mini sizes 50 yen off.

You’ll find Japanese classics like shio (salt), umeboshi (pickled plum), and okaka (bonito flakes), alongside more unique varieties such as kinpira gobo (sautéed burdock root) and “Bacon” (dried daikon radish with bacon).
There are even hearty, meal-worthy fillings like pork kimchi and Taiwanese-style pork (ton-ton).The double-filling series ranges from 450 to 490 yen — note: mini size is not available for these.
These are seriously hefty, so anyone with a small appetite, beware!

The most popular choice? Taiwanese-style pork (ton-ton) paired with sweet tamagoyaki (Japanese omelet)!

Each onigiri is hand-shaped after you order, so calling ahead is a great way to skip the wait (^○^)

Recommended Menu at Turlatta

Salted chicken + kinpira gobo: 490 yen, Taiwanese-style pork (ton-ton) mini: 350 yen

I skipped the most popular combo and went straight for my personal favorites!

Why? Because I’m a regular here, of course…

Let me give first-timers a proper introduction (^^)/
First of all — they are HUGE.

“Are you exaggerating for the photo?” Nope — this is the standard size!“But the filling is overflowing…?” I always think the same thing!
“There’s no way they don’t overstuff it just for the camer…”\(^O^) Nope, no exaggeration here!Look at these adorable onigiri sunbathing peacefully.
Notice something? The one in front is actually the MINI size.
Hmm, hard to tell the size from the photos alone.
And here’s the best part — the rice is served warm and freshly made. The first time I tried one, I was genuinely moved.

Can you see it?A 329-gram onigiri.
The two-filling onigiri is seriously substantial.
Over 200 grams.
Just to confirm — this is the mini size. (Said it again!)
I’ve been talking about looks this whole time, haven’t I?

But the taste — wow, it’s seriously incredible!
The rice is fluffy and comes apart beautifully, paired with fragrant nori (seaweed) that practically melts in your mouth.
The fillings are well-seasoned and delicious on their own, but combined with that hint of salt from the rice, the flavor is just outstanding! The Taiwanese-style pork (ton-ton) has no off-flavors at all — it’s pure, melt-in-your-mouth braised pork heaven (●^o^●) lol

Beyond the shop itself, you can also find Turlatta at local marches and at Tasaki Market on certain days.
The lineup changes daily, so be sure to check their Instagram for updates (^^)

Try one bite, and you’ll be hooked — go grab one of these big, warm, soul-satisfying onigiri for yourself! (^O^)/
