Introducing Magma Shokudo

Hello, travelers! This is “Gussan,” your SaruKuma writer.
With the heat finally easing up a little, I took a long-awaited drive out to Aso!

Today I’m introducing
【Magma Shokudo】,
located in Kawakage, Minami Aso Village, Aso District.
Heading from Nishihara Village toward Minami Aso, you’ll spot it on your left.
There’s a spacious gravel parking lot right in front of the restaurant.
Inside, you’ll find table seating arranged in the center, while the counter seats are positioned to face outward toward the windows.
Why face outward, you ask?
Because at Magma Shokudo, you can enjoy your meal while taking in the magnificent scenery of Aso!
Absolutely beautiful.
They also have child-sized chairs available.Even from the parking lot, you can soak in Aso’s natural beauty.
The sun was still strong, but a refreshing breeze was blowing — it felt wonderful! ♪♪
Here’s the menu at Magma Shokudo.
Despite the name “shokudo” (diner), the lineup is purely a ramen shop.

Ramen (Tonkotsu or Light) — 580 yen
Soy Sauce Ramen — 675 yen
Gyoza Ramen (Tonkotsu or Light) — 775 yen
Miso Ramen — 820 yen
Magma Ramen — 875 yen

The tonkotsu, soy sauce, and salt ramen also come in garlic and curry flavors.
How unique!

Each ramen can be upgraded to a set meal, which comes with
rice or bread (rice flour garlic rusk), gyoza, salad, and pickles.
The option to choose rice flour garlic rusk with a ramen set is also pretty rare.

You can even swap out the rice for takana-meshi (mustard greens rice) — fantastic!
There’s also plenty more on the menu, including:
Akaushi (Aso Red Beef) Rice — 750 yen,
Akaushi Stew — 620 yen, and
Homemade pudding made with Aso Oguni Jersey milk — 160 yen, plus many other Aso-specialty dishes.
Here’s the drink menu, too.
Magma Shokudo is open in the evening, too.
They also offer an after-5 PM appetizer menu.
Each table is loaded with seasonings — vinegar, sesame, and Magma Shokudo’s original “Tongarami-so” chili miso, just to name a few. There’s an impressive lineup at your fingertips.

Magma Shokudo Recommended Menu

Here’s what we ordered this time:
Ramen (Tonkotsu) — 580 yen
My elementary-school-aged son polished off this bowl all by himself.
Seeing him finish a whole bowl of ramen on his own really made me feel how much he’s grown!
Soy Sauce Ramen Set — 1,035 yen
My husband ordered the set meal and switched the rice for takana-meshi.
Whenever you visit Aso, you just have to try this local specialty.
Takana-meshi (Large) — 260 yen
A gentle-flavored mustard greens rice with a wonderful aroma.
Aso Takana Ramen (Light) — 775 yen
A clean, light broth packed with mustard greens that have soaked up all the flavor.
You won’t find this in central Kumamoto City — it’s a true regional treasure!

Children’s plates and forks were also provided.
My daughter accidentally spilled her ramen on the floor afterward, but the experienced ladies running the floor cleaned it up quickly and cheerfully.
(Such a classic family-with-kids moment… so grateful!)

When my child happened to be seated where the air conditioning was blowing directly, the staff kindly checked in: “The breeze is hitting you there — are you okay?” These thoughtful touches make Magma Shokudo a truly family-friendly ramen spot.
If you’re heading out to Aso, be sure to drop by!
