A Sarukuma writer visits ONNI, a charming gluten-free bakery and coffee shop in Kuhonji, Chuo Ward, Kumamoto City. Prices start from Β₯360. We’ve also included family-friendly tips, access info, and opening hours.

Welcome to ONNI

Hello, travelers! I’m Gussan, a writer for Sarukuma.
Today I’m excited to introduce you to ONNI, a delightful little cafe that opened in July 2023 in the Kuhonji area of Chuo Ward, Kumamoto City.

ONNI’s original flagship store is located in Mizukami Village. While Mizukami is a bit off the beaten path from central Kumamoto, that original cafe is well known for its stylish, magazine-worthy atmosphere. We’ve covered it on Sarukuma before.

ONNI is located across from AEON Kumamoto Chuo (formerly Daiei), right by the Kuhonji intersection along the tram line β€” so it’s easy to spot.
The space was previously home to a Japanese tea shop called Wa-no-Cha Ryokugion.
There’s parking right next to the cafe.
The moment I stepped inside ONNI, the warm, sweet aroma of freshly baked goods drifted through the air. I couldn’t help but breathe it all in!
Like the Mizukami location, the interior is built around a clean white palette, giving the whole place a very stylish, Instagram-friendly feel.
You order at the counter and receive a buzzer that signals when your order is ready.

The scones look absolutely irresistible, lined up in the glass display case.
(Takeout tip: order a drink with your scone and get Β₯50 off β€” takeout only.)
There are also adorable Onni Bear cookies featuring the cafe’s original mascot β€” they’re impossible to resist!
Coffee Jelly Latte β€” Β₯600
Coffee Jelly Latte with Gelato β€” Β₯780
Lemon Cheese Terrine β€” Β₯630
Affogato β€” Β₯600
The drink menu also includes coffee, milk tea, and lattes.
The eat-in seating is up the staircase on the second floor.
The railings are slim and there are open spaces, so be sure to hold little ones’ hands on the way up.
The second floor continues the all-white aesthetic, with carefully curated decor that ties the whole space together beautifully.
From here, you can sip your coffee while looking down on the tram line outside.
Fun fact: ONNI means “older sister” in Korean, but in Finnish it means “happiness.” After spending time relaxing in this charming space, I can confirm β€” it really does live up to that Finnish meaning! β™‘There’s also counter seating available.
A staircase leads up to a third floor, but during summer it gets quite hot, so it wasn’t open during our visit.
Once the weather cools off, that upper floor should offer an even better view for tea time.
Restrooms are located on the second floor.
Free Wi-Fi is also available β€” always a welcome bonus for travelers!

Recommended Menu Items at ONNI

ONNI is also a popular spot for fans visiting on “oshi-katsu” outings (Japanese fan culture meet-ups celebrating favorite idols or characters).
The carefully styled decor on each table makes for the perfect photo backdrop.
We ordered the affogato, Uji matcha terrine, and white chocolate & matcha scone β€” among other treats.
No matter which angle I tried, the Onni Bear cookie was always staring back at me β€” way too cute!

I personally went for the Coffee Jelly Latte with Gelato.
The coffee had just the right amount of bitterness, and the finely chopped gelato added a refreshing summery touch β€” a perfect post-meal treat.
Since all of the baked goods are gluten-free, they make wonderful takeout snacks for kids or thoughtful gifts to bring to friends’ homes.
