Welcome to Nakata Seiniku Honpo
Hello travelers! It’s Mido 🌳, your Sarukuma writer.
Today I’m thrilled to introduce you to a hidden gem in Nomaguchi, Kikuchi City:
【Nakata Seiniku Honpo】
This 70-year-old butcher shop, formerly known as “Niku no Nakata,” had its grand renewal opening on April 18, 2023 as “Nakata Seiniku Honpo,”
launching their delightful new “29ya Sweets” line. I just had to check it out! ♪
Nakata Seiniku Honpo is conveniently located along Prefectural Route 53 (the Ueki IC–Kikuchi Line).
You’ll find it right next door to Kikuchi no Manma Kikuchi Branch.
Its roadside location makes it a super easy stop on your Kumamoto road trip!
A friendly maneki-neko (lucky cat) welcomes you at the entrance ♪
Plenty of parking right in front of the shop!

Here’s a peek inside Nakata Seiniku Honpo — it’s wonderfully spacious! ✨
Rows and rows of beautiful meat as far as the eye can see!
You’ll also find handmade wagyu beef hamburger steaks in this section.
A huge selection of pre-packaged meats too — perfect for travelers staying somewhere with a kitchen!
And there’s even more variety over here ✨

The frozen section is equally impressive!
And don’t miss the basashi (horse sashimi) corner — a true Kumamoto specialty! ♪
They even ship basashi nationwide across Japan ✨
You’ll also find gyoza dumplings…
tonsoku (pork trotters), and smoked horse meat too ♪
Beyond meat, they offer lots more.
Yakiniku (BBQ) sauce, cold shabu-shabu sauce, sukiyaki sauce, and more!
Plus a great range of dressings too!
Their prosciutto, bacon, and sausages all look absolutely mouthwatering!
And here’s the prepared deli food corner ✨
So many tempting options:
・Garlic pepper chicken neck (sesori)
・Domestic pork loin tonkatsu
・Wagyu beef croquette
・Wagyu beef and potato croquette
・Domestic chicken tenderloin shiso roll
・Kurobuta (black pork) menchi katsu
・Domestic pork hire katsu (pork fillet cutlet)
・Domestic pork loin cheese roll
・Fried tofu with vegetables
・Domestic pork kushikatsu (skewered cutlet)
Every single one looks amazing! I picked up several for dinner ♪
Here’s a tip for travelers: if you order before 6:30 PM, they’ll fry it fresh for you on the spot!
Nothing beats hot, freshly fried katsu ♪
・Vinegared cucumber and glass noodle salad
・Horse meat rice / horse meat udon / horse meat soba toppings

The Jersey Milk version has the caramel on the bottom, while the Rice Pudding has it on top. Even the caramel colors are different — a fun detail!

First up, the Melt-in-Your-Mouth Jersey Milk Pudding.
(Spot my daughter’s eager hand sneaking into the photo — she couldn’t wait!)
Ingredients: milk, eggs, sugar, vanilla flavoring.
The milk used is the renowned Aso Oguni Jersey 4.5 Milk from the highlands of Mt. Aso.
True to its name, it literally melts in your mouth!
Rich, creamy, and absolutely divine ✨
“This is sooo good!” my kids said, and the puddings vanished in seconds.
Next, the Kikuchi Rice Pudding.
My very first rice pudding experience!
Ingredients: milk, fresh cream, rice, sugar, gelatin, vanilla flavoring.
The rice used is the celebrated Shichijo rice, a local Kikuchi specialty.
It has the lovely texture of rice grains, yet it’s beautifully smooth!
