Today, I’m thrilled to introduce you to a hidden gem in Hirayama Onsen, Yamaga City:
[Hirayama Onsen Flora Yu Cafe]. This is hands-down my favorite hot spring in the area!

The parking lot is wonderfully spacious, with extra spaces tucked toward the back if the front fills up.

Before we dive into the cafe, let me tell you about the star of the show — the onsen itself.

“Flora’s waters are mildly alkaline at pH 9.9.
The high pH gently exfoliates old skin cells for silky-smooth skin,
while the sulfur content is said to help with dark spots.
The waters also contain weak radioactive radon — long known as a ‘cure-all spring’ —
offering both beauty and therapeutic benefits. (From the official website)”

Did you catch that? Beauty hot springs! A skincare treatment and a soak in one!

Entry to the large public bath is just 500 yen for adults and 300 yen for children (ages 4 to junior high school).
There’s also a sauna and an open-air bath — my kids absolutely love it here!

And after your soak (or even if you skip the bath entirely), Yu Cafe is the perfect spot to relax. ♪

The cafe interior offers gorgeous views of Hirayama’s countryside scenery. On my visit, the cherry blossoms outside the window were in full bloom — an absolutely magical sight!

Must-Try Menu Items at Onsen Flora Yu Cafe

I treated myself to the seasonal Strawberry Mille-feuille-Style Soft Serve Parfait. (And just look at those cherry blossoms in the background!)

The staff thoughtfully provided two spoons so my daughter and I could share — such a kind touch!

Layered from the bottom up: confiture, custard cream, flaky pie pastry, fresh strawberries, whipped cream, soft serve, and another strawberry on top — a truly satisfying treat!

The soft serve was piled high in fluffy swirls, smooth and creamy. The staff kindly warned me, “It melts quickly, so snap your photos and dig in fast!” So I did just that — click-click, then time to eat!

The soft serve was lightly sweet and refreshing, while the freshly picked strawberries from local Koga Farm in Hirayama, Yamaga City, brought the perfect sweet-tart punch.
The crispy pie layers added great texture and kept every bite exciting right to the end. (My daughter and I were practically dueling over the last spoonfuls, ha!)

You can even buy fresh strawberries at the small farm stand near the onsen entrance — perfect for taking a taste of Kumamoto home with you!
