2023.01.17

A Sarukuma writer visits POMBO, a charming banh mi and brunch cafe in Oe, Chuo Ward, Kumamoto City. We cover family-friendly tips, access, and opening hours.
Welcome to POMBO
Hello, travelers! I’m Gachako, a writer for Sarukuma.
Today I’m excited to introduce you to POMBO, a delightful cafe located right in front of Kyushu Gakuin in Oe, Chuo Ward, Kumamoto City.
The beloved banh mi shop that used to be in Kurokami has reopened, bigger and better than ever! I previously ordered their take-home dinner set online and was completely blown away by the flavors.
So I couldn’t wait to finally visit them in person!

The cafe sits right along the city tram line, making it incredibly easy to reach.
If you’re driving, please use one of the nearby paid parking lots.
POMBO opens at 7:30 AM, so you can stop in for a wonderful morning breakfast.

Inside, the cafe feels bright and airy thanks to its high ceilings.
It was packed when I visited, so I didn’t get a clear shot of the table area, but there are 4 tables and about 3 counter seats.
Here’s the menu.
You’ll find rye sourdough open-faced sandwiches, eggs Benedict, and of course, banh mi!

The soups, pastas, and french fries are perfect for lunch too.
The “Chase” you’ll see on the menu is the chef’s name. Born in America and trained in French cuisine, Chef Chase brings his family’s home recipes to POMBO.

The food menu rotates daily.
It’s exciting to wonder what tomorrow’s specials might be!
Takeout is also available.

Dine-in customers must order at least one drink.
Kids’ drinks are on the menu, so families with children are very welcome here.
Recommended Menu Items at POMBO

I tried the Aozora Tamago Open-Faced Sandwich!
Aozora Tamago are premium, nutrient-rich eggs from Yamaga City π₯. Japanese-style scrambled eggs with green onions sit atop a generous layer of sweet-savory caramelized onions.
Everything balances beautifully on the sourdough β somehow staying put without falling off.
It’s hands-down the most delicious open-faced sandwich I’ve ever had!

I also enjoyed the Root Vegetable Cream Soup!
A rich, creamy soup featuring potatoes, turnips, and other seasonal vegetables.
The hints of dill and green onion add such depth β absolutely delicious!
It was a chilly day, and this warmed me right up.

Meanwhile, my daughter sipped her orange juice while watching the city trams roll by β the best seat in the house!
We shared everything family-style for a perfect breakfast together.

Look! Right outside the window, you can see the tram tracks. It’s a dream come true for train lovers. The seating layout here is pure genius.
And after paying, the staff sends you off with a cheerful “Itterasshai!” (Have a great day!)
I wish I could be sent off like that every morning. Locals are so lucky!
Come start your day right at POMBO.
Of course, they also offer lunch and bistro-style menu items.
