Introducing Michi-no-Eki Amakusa Dolphin Center
Hello travelers! It’s Igaguri π°, your Sarukuma writer.
Today I’m excited to introduce a wonderful spot in Itsuwa-machi, Amakusa City:
Michi-no-Eki Amakusa Dolphin Center.

Wait β is this an aquarium?
Is this really a roadside station (michi-no-eki)? The visuals are stunning!

Filled with dolphin imagery throughout, this roadside station feels like a theme park β exciting from the moment you arrive!

Step inside and you’re greeted by a huge reception desk for Amakusa’s signature attraction: dolphin watching tours!

There are even free guided tours available inside the facility.

Honestly, it’s so charming you might forget you’re at a roadside station and think you’ve wandered into an aquarium!

The fishery cooperative restaurant on the 2nd floor was previously featured by our writer Uentsu!

The observation deck offers spectacular ocean views!

There are also kid-sized chairs and tableware available β perfect for families! β

On the 1st floor, you’ll find a takeout shop called “Irucafe” (Dolphin Cafe).

Their menu features irresistible items like:
β’ Dolphin-shaped castella cake (Iruka-stella)
β’ Shaved ice (kakigori)
β’ Tapioca drinks
β’ Sea salt soft serve in a fermented butter pie cone β Kyushu’s first! π€€
β» Note: Irucafe was temporarily closed during my visit.

Just when I was sad about missing out on ice cream, I spotted some unique local flavors!
Amakusa Sankaku Ice
Aosa (sea lettuce) ice cream!?

Wait… octopus rice ice cream (takomeshi ice cream)!? Now that’s adventurous!
While I was busy being amazed, the kids next to me were absorbed in something else entirely…

They were captivated by the moray eel!

Meanwhile, my husband was fascinated by the gyotaku (traditional fish prints).
There’s truly something for everyone at this roadside station!
Recommended Menu at Michi-no-Eki Amakusa Dolphin Center

An assorted Amakusa sashimi platter for just 599 yen?!
Can I have this for lunch this as a snack, please?!

You’ll also find premium natural sea salt that elevates any dish.

And look β bite-sized akamaki (red-rolled sweets)!

Akamaki is a famous local sweet from Ushibuka, in the southern part of Amakusa.
I’d always wanted to try it, but a full-size roll was too much for one person β so I’d never gotten the chance until now!
I expected something like Ehime’s famous “Ichiroku Tart” with its yuzu citrus aroma,
but akamaki is wrapped in soft, chewy gyuhi (sweet rice dough) β wonderfully mochi-like!
The akamaki sold here at Michi-no-Eki Dolphin Center is made by “Sakoshi Confectionery,”
and some say it’s the most authentic akamaki you can find. Time to find out for myself…

The dolphin watching boat captains here are highly skilled,
and the dolphin watching tours are incredibly popular with visitors!
