Welcome to Garden & Cafe Sugar

Hello, lovely travelers!
It’s your SaruKuma writer Binako here,
feeling my appetite grow bigger by the day!

Today I’d like to introduce you to a truly special spot:
“Garden & Cafe Sugar”, tucked away in
Kamikata-machi, Yatsushiro City, Kumamoto Prefecture.

The moment I parked my car, I just knew.
“Oh wow, this place is going to be magical.”

By the way, the parking lot is right next to the cafe.

Step inside and you’ll find both table seating and counter seats.

But take a closer look β€” the counter is actually a piano!
Yes, you read that right. A counter that’s also a piano.
Isn’t that just incredible? I was instantly smitten.

Step outside and you’ll discover rows of rose plants.
I could only imagine how stunning they must be in full bloom β€”
the thought alone left me starry-eyed.

It’s still in preparation, but they’re planning to host weddings here too!
My photos honestly don’t do it justice β€”
in person, this garden is breathtakingly beautiful.
You really, truly need to see it for yourself!

Still buzzing with excitement, I headed back inside to discover
a beautiful display of rose-infused jams and syrups.
Oh dear, my shopping urge was activated immediately.

There’s also a wonderful selection of olive oils.
Is this my personal oasis? It absolutely is.
Everything here is exactly my taste β€” I could stay forever.

Homemade scones are also on offer.
They’re so popular that nearly every guest grabs some on the way out.

If you want to soak in the cafe’s atmosphere but don’t have time to dine in,
the takeout menu is a perfect option.

Garden & Cafe Sugar’s Must-Try Menu

And here’s the dine-in menu.
There are lunch options too.
A Kids Plate (880 yen) is also available, making it a great spot for families.

The menu is so packed with tempting items, I kept saying “Ooh, I want that!”
Many of the dishes are exclusive to Sugar.

This time I went for the Pulled Pork & Cheese.
The salad came with vegetables grown by the cafe themselves.
And let me tell you β€” that salad alone was a revelation.

The pork was tender and beautifully shredded,
paired with melty, gooey cheese β€” pure happiness.
And the carefully selected wheat brings such a wonderful aroma to every bite.

And then there’s the Rose Soft Serve Ice Cream.
A luxurious dessert packed with little moments of delight.
At just 500 yen, it’s a steal.

Topped with rose syrup,
it has the perfect balance of sweetness and a refreshing floral aroma.

Try it with a spoonful of the rose jam
and the floral fragrance just blooms in your mouth.
For a moment, I felt like I was a rose myself.

Pair it with the crispy rusk and you’ve got a match made in heaven.
Honestly, this rusk is dangerously delicious.

It’s coated in a luscious orange-chocolate glaze
that balances tart and sweet in every bite β€” pure jewel-box magic.
And no, I’m not exaggerating β€” it really does melt in your mouth.

Dig deeper and you’ll find generous chunks of blueberry hiding inside.
A refreshingly clean finish that ties it all together β€” a perfect finale.

I was also intrigued by the Tomato Tea.
“What on earth is that?” I thought as I ordered it,
and when it arrived, I was even more intrigued: “What IS this?!”

The drink itself isn’t overly sweet β€” just a light, lovely tea flavor.
And the tomato sitting at the bottom? I wanted to take it home
and eat it for breakfast, lunch, snack, every single day.

Fresh tomatoes are soaked directly in syrup,
giving them a beautifully fresh, natural sweetness.

As I sat happily full and content, the owner began a live piano performance.
Some guests are so moved they actually shed tears β€” the music is that beautiful.
The peaceful atmosphere wrapped around me like a warm blanket.

Once home, I tucked into the homemade scones I’d taken with me.
Loaded with rich chunks of chocolate,
those warm, comforting scones extended
the magic of the visit long after I left.

I really hope you’ll go and experience this cafe’s charm in person.
Let yourself be wrapped in joy, beauty, and a little bit of magic!
