Welcome to Komoku Shoten

Hello, fellow travelers!
This is Binako, writer for Sarukuma!
Today, I’m excited to introduce Komoku Shoten, a charming curry spot tucked away in Goryo, Shiranui-machi, Uki City, Kumamoto Prefecture β€” a true hidden gem worth seeking out.

Komoku Shoten previously operated as a “borrowed kitchen” curry shop in the Tsuboi area before settling into this dedicated location. After hearing rave reviews from Koshindo Curry (also featured on Sarukuma), I had been dying to visit, and I finally made it happen!
It was a long-awaited dream come true.

The parking lot is conveniently located right in front of the shop β€” a real plus if you’re driving from elsewhere in Kumamoto.

Even before opening time, cars were already pulling in one after another, a clear testament to just how popular Komoku Shoten has become with locals.

Inside, you’ll find both counter seating and table seating.
Many solo diners drop in for lunch here, and the welcoming, easy-going atmosphere makes it perfect even if you’re traveling alone.

Toward the back, a charming selection of books lines the shelves β€” a lovely touch that surely draws in book lovers looking for a quiet spot to enjoy a meal.

Komoku Shoten’s Must-Try Menu

Here’s the menu!
The left page features the regular orderable items.
The right page lists the rare, rotating specials that may or may not be available β€” be sure to check Komoku Shoten’s Facebook page before visiting to see what’s on offer.

This time, I went for the Aigake Curry (1,250 yen) β€” a combo plate with two curries side by side.

The lineup: lotus root keema curry and green curry β€” the ultimate indulgence for curry fans.

Lotus root in curry?! If you’re skeptical, think again!
The lotus root (renkon) adds a wonderful crunchy texture that elevates the entire dish β€” it’s surprisingly delicious.

And those two crispy lotus root chips perched on top? They’re crisp, golden, and let you savor the pure, earthy flavor of this beloved Japanese vegetable.

The spice level is just right, with a refreshingly clean finish that keeps you coming back for more.
The ginger and warming spices give your whole body a cozy glow β€” perfect for a cool day exploring Kumamoto.

The green curry is creamy and beautifully mellow.
Loaded with mushrooms, tomatoes, and meat so tender it practically melts in your mouth, every bite delivers a little burst of happiness.

Even with a generous portion of rice, the spicy yet refreshing curry was so well-balanced that I finished every last bite without ever feeling weighed down.
In fact, I felt like I could happily order another plate β€” it’s that light and satisfying!

The friendly, welcoming staff add the final touch to a memorable dining experience.
If you’re exploring the Uki City area, this is one curry stop you absolutely shouldn’t miss!
