Hello there!
I’m “Rikotama,” a writer for SaruKuma!

The typhoon has passed,
and we’re starting to feel that crisp, refreshing autumn breeze!

When you think of autumn, there’s autumn for reading! Autumn for sports! Autumn for the arts! So many wonderful things…
But above all, isn’t it really the season of autumn appetite? (*^-^*)

Today, I’m introducing you to a charming traditional Japanese sweets shop located in Hiroki, Higashi Ward, Kumamoto City:
Ebisuya Mochi Honpo & EBISU Cafe!

The shop is filled with mouthwatering Japanese sweets (wagashi)!
Since I arrived first thing in the morning, every variety was available! β˜†

*The shop catches plenty of morning sunlight, so apologies in advance if some photos appear bright! (>_<)

Ebisuya is famous for its daifuku (mochi rice cakes filled with sweet bean paste) made with seasonal fruits!

On the day I visited, the lineup included:
Grape Daifuku β€” 180 yen
Kiwi Daifuku β€” 230 yen
Green Peach Daifuku β€” 160 yen

The “green peach” is made by mixing peaches that are still slightly green (before they ripen to pink) with white bean paste, then wrapping it all in mochi!

The grape daifuku comes in two varieties:
(Shine Muscat with white bean paste & Pione grape with black bean paste) β™ͺ

I was amazed at the size of the kiwi daifuku!
Apparently it contains an entire half of a kiwi!

I also loved the cute kiwi mascot displayed casually in the shop (*’Ο‰’*)

You’ll also find classics like the Salt-Bean Daifuku (120 yen),

and delicious-looking Mitarashi Dango (sweet soy-glazed rice dumplings, 100 yen) ♬

Other treats include Ohagi (sweet rice cakes covered in red bean paste, 120 yen), Kinako Mochi (mochi with roasted soybean flour, 120 yen), and Ikinari Dango (Kumamoto’s signature sweet potato dumpling, 120 yen)!

The shop also sells handmade accessories, masks, and other miscellaneous goods! β˜†

Lovely accessories

And there are plenty of adorable patterns for kids’ masks too! 🌸

Although it wasn’t open yet during my visit (cafe opens at 11:30),
there’s a cafe in the back of the shop!
It has a calm, relaxing atmosphere, and they even provide chairs for kids!

The cafe menu features mochi pizza and a variety of other creative mochi-based dishes!

I definitely want to try the cafe next time! β™ͺ
A takeout menu is also available!

You can also enjoy your treats at the covered rest area! β™«
There’s one parking spot next to the rest area,

plus 4 more spaces alongside the shop!

*Every year on May 5th (Children’s Day in Japan), our family buys kashiwa-mochi (oak-leaf-wrapped mochi) at Ebisuya, and on that day the parking lot and shop are absolutely packed! (≧▽≦)

I highly recommend arriving early!

Shimoezu Lake (Ezuko) and Hiroki Park are also right nearby!
After playing your heart out at the park,
why not unwind with some traditional Japanese sweets? β™ͺ

Recommended Menu Items

This time, I tried the Green Peach Daifuku, Grape Daifuku, and Kiwi Daifuku!

It really was a small, green peach! β˜†
The white bean paste and peach matched beautifully β€” it had a refined, grown-up flavor (*^-^*)

The kids’ favorite was the Shine Muscat!
My son’s review: “It was sweet and delicious!!!”

The Pione grape daifuku and kiwi daifuku were also incredibly juicy,
with a light, refreshing sweetness
that made them disappear in no time! β™ͺ

These are guaranteed to be a hit as a souvenir or gift!
