About DINO BASE Mifune

Today I’m excited to introduce you to DINO BASE Mifune, a charming little shop located in Hetami, Mifune Town, Kamimashiki District, Kumamoto Prefecture.

You’ll find this shop tucked inside Mifune Town Fureai Hiroba, a delightful park we’ve featured on SaruKuma before. Mifune Town is famous in Japan as the “Town of Dinosaurs,” so this dinosaur-themed cafe fits right in!

Step inside and you’ll find a paradise of dinosaur goodies: Funemaru-kun (the local mascot) baked sweets, dinosaur-shaped cookies, and so many treats that kids will be begging to take home as souvenirs.

You’ll also discover T-shirts, eco bags, and toys — perfect Kumamoto souvenirs for the dinosaur fan in your family.
Don’t be surprised when you hear little voices exclaiming, “I want this one!”

There’s even a nursing room inside, so families with infants and toddlers can visit with peace of mind.

Outdoor tables are set up for enjoying your treats al fresco.
The weather was beautiful on our visit, so we settled in at a table to enjoy our snacks while gazing at the dinosaur statues nearby — a uniquely Mifune experience!

Must-Try Menu Items at DINO BASE Mifune

The menu features soft serve ice cream, kakigori (Japanese shaved ice), and popcorn — all the classic park snacks you’d hope for on a sunny day out.

The milk used in their soft serve comes from Abe Farm (Abe Bokujo), a beloved local dairy from the Aso area.

The matcha used in their soft serve is also carefully selected, making it irresistible even for grown-up sweet lovers.

This time, we tried the signature Dinosaur Soft Serve (400 yen).

Lined up side by side, these little dino faces are twice as adorable!

“Wow!” — any dinosaur-loving kid will light up the moment they see these treats.

Seeing that joyful reaction makes the trip absolutely worth it.

I had a bite myself, and the matcha was wonderfully fragrant — you can actually see the texture of the tea leaves, and the flavor is rich and authentic. Truly delicious!

The fun continues with playful conversation: “The eyes are made of chocolate…” — a single ice cream creates so much joy and family bonding. It really was a happy little moment.
