Welcome to Haru Haru Korean Restaurant

Hello there!
It’s been a while β€” this is Binako, your Sarukuma writer, back with another tasty discovery!

Today, I’m excited to introduce you to “Haru Haru”, a charming Korean restaurant tucked away in Hotakubo-Honmachi, Higashi-ku, Kumamoto City.

The exterior is striking β€” painted in a fresh, calming blue, with lovely flowers welcoming you at the entrance. It’s the kind of place that makes you smile before you even step inside.

There’s also a wonderfully open-air terrace seating area outside. On a warm spring day, having lunch out here would be such a treat β€” pure bliss.

The interior is just as charming β€” warm, cozy, and beautifully decorated. There are about four to five table seats, giving the space an intimate, neighborhood feel.

For lunch, Haru Haru offers a special Event Lunch and a traditional Korean Royal Court Cuisine course (served on the 1st and 4th weeks of the month).
Reservations are required at least two days in advance β€” don’t forget to book ahead!

This time, I went with the Event Lunch (1,500 yen) β€” and what an experience it was!

The star of the day was Tteji Gamja-tang, a hearty Korean stew made with pork from Kikuchi, Kumamoto. It uses pork backbone β€” a cut beloved in authentic Korean cooking for its deep, rich flavor.

The big chunks of pork practically fall apart at the touch of your chopsticks β€” unbelievably tender.
The staff told me the meat between the bones is the most delicious part β€” and they were absolutely right!

The stew is also packed with generous, chunky potatoes that soak up all the rich broth. A gentle, satisfying spice rounds it all out beautifully.

Don’t miss the perilla leaf (egoma) topping β€” it’s the secret ingredient! Not only does it add a wonderful texture, but it’s also packed with nutrients. It’s the kind of healthy, traditional ingredient you don’t get to enjoy every day, so definitely savor it.

All the vegetables here are pesticide-free. As someone who loves clean, wholesome eating, this made my heart so happy.

And here’s the handmade, additive-free quick kimchi. Pure, simple, and unmistakably authentic β€” I literally couldn’t put my chopsticks down. Honestly, they should bottle and sell this stuff!

The multigrain rice is a gem in itself. Each grain stands out beautifully, with a natural sweetness that shines through.

You can ask for refills, too β€” and one of my favorite tips is to dump a generous helping right into the Tteji Gamja-tang broth. Instant flavor change, and twice the fun!

To finish, I was served a soothing cup of Ketsumeishi tea (cassia seed tea), known for being good for tired eyes and offering a wide range of health benefits. The perfect way to relax and wind down after a meal.

“Today is another happy day because we met such a wonderful you.”

On the way out, I noticed a heartfelt message written in Korean Hangul on the door β€” a sweet little touch that genuinely moved me.
