Welcome to Hegren

Hello, fellow travelers!
I’m Binako, a writer for Sarukuma, and I look forward to my weekly Shiitake horoscope reading.

Today I’m introducing you to a charming little spot tucked away in Misumi-machi Korinoura, Uki City, Kumamoto Prefecture:
“Hegren”.

The shop sits at the top of a gentle slope.
At first glance you might walk right past it without realizing it’s a restaurant β€” and that hidden-gem feeling is exactly part of its charm.

There are about four parking spots beneath the building.

Just past the parking area, I spotted a fairy-tale-like nook that practically begged me to wander in and explore.

Step inside, and you’re swept up into a wonderfully atmospheric world.

The space is filled with character β€” vintage ornaments, retro knick-knacks, and curious little treasures everywhere you look.

I couldn’t resist snapping a photo of this quirky “Surgery in Progress” sign β€” pure retro charm!

The view from the windows is gorgeous, too β€”
so make sure to soak it in while you enjoy your lunch.

The shop has a kids’ chair, a sofa bed, and even a shower available,
so parents traveling with little ones can visit with peace of mind.

One important note: Hegren is reservation-only, so be sure to call ahead before you visit.

Hegren’s Recommended Menu

When you call to reserve, you choose between curry or pasta.
This time, I went with the Curry (1,500 yen).

Even the water glass is stylish and sweet β€” every detail makes me want to recreate this kind of table at home.

First up: salad.
A classic, old-school combination of ham, cucumber, and fresh greens β€” simple and satisfying.
The little mandarin orange on the side? My kids snatched it up the moment it hit the table. (laughs)

Next, the curry arrives β€”
topped with a beautifully decorated boiled egg. I love these little artistic touches.

Packed with chickpeas, tofu, and other beans and legumes, this nutrient-rich curry is wholesome and hearty.
Everything is chopped into bite-sized pieces, making it easy to eat,
and the warm, lingering spice keeps you reaching for the next bite.

And to finish, a gentle, comforting dessert.
It’s the kind of sweet treat I’d happily eat every single day if I could keep it at home.

The presentation of the post-meal coffee is just as lovely.
From start to finish, lunch here is a feast for the eyes as well as the palate.

The owner even brought out an extra ice cream “for the little one.”
How thoughtful can one person be?

With her warm smile and graceful way of speaking β€” yet quick wit and playful humor β€”
you’ll become an instant fan of this wonderful owner.

Stunning views, delicious lunch, a magical retro space, and a charming owner β€”
in a single visit, I fell completely in love with everything about Hegren.

It might take a phone call to get in, but trust me, this hidden Kumamoto treasure is absolutely worth it.
