Karaage Home Run in Kumamoto City: Giant, Crispy Japanese Fried Chicken That’ll Knock You Out of the Park
2021.11.05

Recommended Menu at Karaage Home Run

A large menu board sits right in front of the register, making ordering easy.
Just remember — the order counter and pickup counter are separate, so don’t get confused!

Perfect for a quick travel snack:
“Chicken Wing Karaage” (480 yen) and “Hajikko-kun” — crispy edge pieces (320 yen).

Look closely and you’ll see the tempting “Grand Slam Bento” (1,200 yen).
Apparently, it’s so packed with karaage that the lid barely closes! (laughs)
Now I’m dying to see one in person.
Funnily enough, every illustration on the menu features someone crying — apparently from “umashi-naki” (“crying because it’s too delicious”)!

This time, I ordered:
・Umashio (Salt) Karaage / Soy Sauce Karaage (280 yen each)
・Special Sweet Sauce Chicken Wing Karaage (480 yen)

Let’s start with the shop’s signature “Umashio Karaage.”

I couldn’t help but blurt out: “HUGE!”

The crust is incredibly crispy. Crunch after satisfying crunch.
The coating alone is so flavorful you could eat it on its own.
The punchy garlic aroma combined with the perfect saltiness is irresistible.
I polished off two pieces in seconds.

Next up, the “Soy Sauce Karaage.”
That gorgeous golden-brown crust is a thing of beauty.

“HUGE!” (round two)

Same incredibly crunchy coating, but with the savory aroma of soy sauce.
It’s the kind of flavor that makes you want a giant bowl of white rice on the side.
The chicken inside is tender and juicy — kids are guaranteed to love it.
No wonder people are crying tears of joy over this stuff!

How could you resist when this is right in front of you?

I went ahead and ate the chicken wing karaage with my hands (sorry, not sorry!), and
I literally couldn’t stop reaching for more.
It’s delicious even when it cools down — actually, I prefer it cold because the sweet sauce soaks into the crust beautifully.
Someone, please stop my hand…! Oh… nope… all gone. (laughs)

Of course, I helped myself to the self-serve egg soup too.
So silky and comforting — the perfect companion to crunchy karaage.

Trust me, you’ll be crying tears of joy too — “umashi-naki” guaranteed!
Whether you’re picking up dinner, lunch, or a snack to go with drinks, Karaage Home Run is well worth a visit while you’re exploring Kumamoto.
