Introducing Kashi Koubou Nijiiro

Hello, fellow travelers!
I’m Binako, a Sarukuma writer who loves food so much I’d happily become one myself!

Today I’m taking you to Uchinomaki in Aso City, Kumamoto Prefecture,
to a charming little spot called “Kashi Koubou Nijiiro” (Nijiiro Sweets Workshop).

This delightful cake shop is run from the first floor of a private home — a true neighborhood gem.

Nearby, you’ll also find “Bakery Genki” and the “Aso Milk Factory”,
both of which we’ve covered on Sarukuma. Be sure to check them out too!

There’s parking for about two cars right next to the shop — convenient if you’re road-tripping around Aso.

Inside, the shop has a cozy, welcoming atmosphere.
The kitchen is right at the back, so you can actually watch the pastry chefs at work — a fun little bonus for visitors.

The display case is filled with a tempting variety: fresh fruit cake slices,
classic Japanese pudding, almond tofu, roll cakes, and more.

Whole cakes are available too,
so this is a great spot to grab something special for a birthday celebration.

Nijiiro’s cakes are hugely popular among locals,
with plenty of devoted regulars coming back again and again.

The standout favorite? The signature “Niji Shu” cream puff (100 yen).

“Cheap and unbelievably delicious!” is the universal verdict.
And honestly, 100 yen is incredible value…

You’ll also find an array of baked sweets lining the shelves…

…along with carefully selected coffee — the perfect companion for an afternoon snack.

Picking up a cake-and-coffee set makes a wonderful gift for friends or hosts,
and sets the stage for a truly delightful tea time.

Must-Try Picks at Kashi Koubou Nijiiro

I simply couldn’t leave without trying it.
So of course, I ordered the famous “Niji Shu” cream puff (100 yen).

It’s a perfectly petite, palm-sized treat that’s easy to eat in a few bites.

As you can see, the cream practically overflows from the piping hole,
so my pro tip is to flip it upside down before taking a bite.

You’re probably wondering, “Is it really that overflowing with cream?”
Yes — really. And here’s why…
the dough is incredibly chewy and stretchy.

One bite and your eyes will widen in amazement.
“I’ve never had a cream puff like this!!” — guaranteed reaction.

The choux pastry has the bouncy, chewy texture of pão de queijo (Brazilian cheese bread),
filled with smooth, gently sweet, rich custard…
An irresistible combination that stole my heart in an instant.

One was definitely not enough — I wanted more!

Another big favorite is the “Mont Blanc” (350 yen).

If you’re a fan of Japanese chestnuts, this classic Japanese-style dessert is a must-buy.

Light, fluffy sponge cake meets delicately sweet whipped cream,
topped with a marron cream that beautifully showcases the natural flavor of chestnuts.

The rich, natural sweetness of chestnut comes through with every bite.

If you’re traveling through the Aso region, please make a stop here.
You absolutely have to try this one-of-a-kind chewy cream puff.

It made me want to come back and try every single cake on offer.
Go see for yourself — you won’t regret it!
