Welcome to OCEAN — A Casual Takeout Gem in Yatsushiro

Today I’m introducing a fantastic local spot in Matsuzaki-machi, Yatsushiro City, Kumamoto Prefecture:
“OCEAN”.

This is a takeout shop specializing in burgers, Japanese-style fried chicken (karaage), and bento boxes. You can also enjoy your meal at the outdoor terrace seating 🌴🌊🌺

Fun fact — OCEAN also runs a second location inside Kumamon Port Yatsushiro, which we’ve covered before.

I’ll introduce that spot a bit later too ＼(^o^)／

Let’s start with the main shop…

The shop is located directly across from Matsutaka Elementary School. Parking is available right next to the shop 🚙💨

You can enjoy your freshly made order at the outdoor terrace right in front of the shop. There’s a vending machine on-site too!

Since the shop is across from a school, I spotted a group of local boys happily sharing fries together 👦 So wholesome (^^)

Here’s the burger and fries menu ♪

OCEAN Burger — 1,200 yen
BLT Cheeseburger — 700 yen
Hamburger — 500 yen
Karaage Burger — 500 yen, and more.

A karaage burger?! Now that sounds intriguing 😲

And here’s the karaage menu 🐔 — Japanese-style fried chicken sold by weight.

100g (about 2 pieces) starts at 240 yen.

You can choose from 4 flavors: salt karaage, karaage nanban (sweet vinegar with tartar sauce), chili chicken, and sweet-and-savory soy sauce 🎶

I arrived a bit late in the afternoon, so the bento boxes were already sold out (^^;;

Karaage bento and weekly-rotating bento — all priced at 500 yen each.

Furupote (flavored fries) — 300 yen with a whopping 8 different flavor options (^O^)

Tapioca (boba) drinks — 350 yen. So affordable! 😍

OCEAN’s Must-Try Menu Items

First up, I tried the BLT Burger — 600 yen.

The OCEAN logo on the wrapping is so stylish 😍

And it has serious heft to it!!!

My daughter said, “The patty alone is so good, I’d happily eat it as a hamburg steak 😋”

I had a bite too — seriously satisfying and filling 😍

I also got the fries — 200 yen (as a burger combo set price). A la carte fries are 250 yen.

The container is absolutely packed (ﾟ∀ﾟ)

Honestly, I could eat fries forever (^^)
So getting this much volume made me really happy 🎶

And now, as I mentioned at the start…

Let me introduce the OCEAN tenant shop at Kumamon Port Yatsushiro (^O^)

It’s just a short drive from the main shop. The photo shows the tenant area.

This tenant location had its pre-opening on April 25.
The shop is still being polished and isn’t quite finished yet.

Take a look at this!! The container is so stuffed it’s almost bursting (ﾟ∀ﾟ)

And the small pack is just 500 yen!! Once I saw it, there was no way I could walk by (^^)

This salt karaage is made WITHOUT garlic or ginger (^^)

A big bonus, especially for women on the go 💛

And each piece is HUGE!!! Seriously jaw-dropping size 😍

The outside is incredibly crispy 🎶 The chicken skin in particular is shockingly crunchy and absolutely delicious (´∀｀)

And the inside is super juicy!!!

I was genuinely surprised — who knew karaage could taste this incredible without garlic or ginger? (^O^)

Of course, the same karaage is available at the main shop too! (At the main location, it’s sold by weight.)
