Welcome to Tatsuoka Natural Park

Hello there!
This is Maru, a writer for Sarukuma!

Today, I’m taking you to Hanazono-machi, Uto City, Kumamoto Prefecture, to visit
“Tatsuoka Natural Park”.

This natural park is centered around two beautiful ponds โ€” Hanazono Pond and Tatsuoka Pond โ€” and features a sports center, multipurpose grounds, jogging routes, and the Ganmaisan walking trail. But above all elseโ€ฆ
it’s famous as one of Kumamoto’s top cherry blossom (sakura) destinations!

Believe it or not, the park is home to a stunning 2,000 cherry trees!โ˜…
Why didn’t I come during cherry blossom season?! (laughs)

But here’s the best part โ€”
even once the cherry blossoms have fallen, you can enjoy fresh spring greenery, azaleas, Japanese iris (hanashobu), and hydrangeas โ€” there’s something blooming through every season!

Here’s the park map.

You can stroll the perimeter of both ponds along a well-maintained loop. It’s about 3 km in total โ€” seriously huge!

Including smaller lots, there are 6 parking areas in total around the park ๐Ÿš™๐Ÿ’จ

The photo shows the largest parking lot. The white building is the Sports Center, which has tennis courts and a gymnasium.

You’ll find vending machines at the Sports Center entrance, with restrooms just behind, next to the tennis courts!

There are 5 restrooms throughout the park, but some only have traditional Japanese-style squat toilets, so

we highly recommend the Sports Center restroom โ€” it has Western-style toilets and even a child seat (^O^)

By the way, right across from the Sports Center, you’ll find Ajisen Ramen Sano Branch!
Perfect for grabbing a delicious lunch after your walk (^O^)

Top Highlights of Tatsuoka Natural Park

There’s a single playground structure for kids near the Sports Center ๐Ÿ‘ฆ๐Ÿ‘ง

Right next to the playground, there’s a fun little hill kids can climb and play on (^^)

Now then โ€” let’s head out for a stroll around the pond! ๐ŸŽถ

The walking paths are well-paved and lined with plenty of benches, so you can take breaks and soak in the scenery whenever you like!

This is the famous cherry blossom tunnel ๐ŸŒธ๐ŸŒธ๐ŸŒธ

Right now it’s draped in beautiful, vibrant new leaves! ๐Ÿ˜

And the sunlight sparkling on the pond is absolutely dazzling โœจ

So peaceful and refreshing.

You’ll even spot a small Shinto shrine tucked along the pathโ€ฆ

And there’s also a delightful spot called “Komorebi no Mori” (Forest of Filtered Sunlight), where you can enjoy a short woodland hike! \(^o^)/

When I visited in early April, the wisteria flowers were in full, glorious bloom.

Wisteria happens to be one of my personal favorite flowers ๐Ÿ˜

And around June, the Japanese iris (hanashobu) garden bursts into bloom!
Those rich purple flowers are simply breathtaking.

And on top of all that, there’s a campground too!

Heads up โ€” there’s a notice posted about hornets (suzumebachi) in the camping area, so please be cautious.
You can also enjoy BBQ here!
For reservations and inquiries, please contact the Uto City Sports Center.

Camping in shaded spots right by the water โ€” what a luxurious treat! \(^o^)/

I only walked around half of Tatsuoka Pond, but it still felt like a really good hike.

Strolling among seasonal flowers, lush trees, and shimmering waters genuinely soothes the soul ๐Ÿƒ๐ŸŒฑ Be sure to visit and experience it for yourself! (^O^)
