About Ikenokawa Spring
Hello, travelers!
This is Ayu-mama, writer for SaruKuma!
Today I’m introducing Ikenokawa Spring (池の川水源), located in Nakamatsu, Minamiaso Village, Aso District, Kumamoto Prefecture.
【Ikenokawa Suigen】
It’s conveniently close to Shirakawa Spring (白川水源) and the strawberry-picking spot Minamiaso Thomas Farm (南阿蘇トーマス農園) that I introduced previously — perfect for combining into one day trip!
This region is blessed with an abundance of natural springs.

The signboards introduce many of the nearby springs you can visit.
Ikenokawa Spring is proudly listed among Japan’s 100 Famous Waters (Meisui Hyakusen)!
Since ancient times, this spring has been an essential source of drinking water and daily living water for the local community.
There’s a parking area available.
Please note that there are no restrooms or vending machines on site. (But honestly, with such delicious water flowing freely, who needs a vending machine?)
There’s also a covered bench area where you can take a relaxing break.
On the day we visited, the cherry blossoms within the grounds were in full bloom — absolutely stunning!
Behind the spring stands a small shrine where local deities are enshrined. We paid our respects before drinking the water — a lovely cultural touch to the experience!
Cups are conveniently provided so you can scoop and drink the water right on the spot.
Why You’ll Love Ikenokawa Spring
Just look at this!
The clarity of the water is simply breathtaking. Photos can’t fully capture how stunning it really is.
The surface sparkles brilliantly in the sunlight, like nature’s own diamonds.
My son took a sip and paused to enjoy the moment.
“DELICIOUS!!” he shouted with pure joy!
It’s pure, safe water that even children can drink with confidence.
Though it’s a small spring, the water of Aso never disappoints — the taste is truly exceptional!
The warm season is just around the corner.
Why not embark on an Aso spring-hopping tour to escape the heat and refresh your senses? (^^)
