Introducing Okashi no Mori Kugino

Hello, travelers!
I’m Binako, a writer for SaruKuma, and today I’m taking you to one of the prettiest little patisseries hidden in the Aso countryside.

The shop I’m introducing is Okashi no Mori Kugino, located in Kawakage, Minamiaso Village, Aso District, Kumamoto Prefecture — a charming sweets shop tucked into a peaceful, nature-rich corner of southern Aso.

The shop sits at the top of a gentle slope, surrounded by lush greenery — a wonderfully scenic spot. Even the storefront sign has an adorable, storybook charm that won me over instantly.

Parking is conveniently located right in front of the shop.

There’s also outdoor seating, which means guests traveling with their dogs are welcome — you can enjoy your cake at the outdoor tables with your furry companion.

Inside, many items had already sold out by the time I arrived — the cream puffs (shu cream) are especially popular and were completely gone for the day. A clear sign of how loved this little shop is by locals.

You’ll also find whole roll cakes perfect for sharing, including the Matcha Roll (Â¥1,188) and the Pure Cream Roll (Â¥1,188) — ideal for groups or families.

Another customer favorite is the Apple Pie (Â¥2,484). Individual slices are also available — a perfect little reward to treat yourself! ♪There’s also a wide variety of country-style cookies — wonderful as a casual gift or souvenir to bring home.

The shop also offers a lovely selection of baked confections, and you can request mixed gift assortments to take home.

Drinks are available for those choosing to dine in.

Whether you choose the breezy outdoor terrace or the cozy indoor seating, you can enjoy your cake whichever way suits the weather and your mood.

Okashi no Mori Kugino — Recommended Menu

This time, I tried the Strawberry Basket (Â¥453)!
Just look at this magnificent size and volume!

For scale, I placed a tennis ball next to it.
Yes — it’s bigger than a tennis ball!
This pastry is seriously generous, and as a sweets lover, I was practically buzzing with joy.

The fluffy sponge cake paired with the crisp, flaky outer pastry is an absolutely exquisite combination — the contrast in textures is simply perfect, and the sweetness is wonderfully balanced. Add the gentle tartness of fresh strawberries on top, and… I was genuinely moved.

As I dug deeper, surprise — creamy custard and whipped cream were waiting inside!
It’s a luxurious assortment of everything wonderful, all in one bite!

And just when I thought it couldn’t get better — a whole strawberry appeared from inside!
Honestly, it was a parade of every single thing I love — pure, blissful gratitude!

The Strawberry Basket at Okashi no Mori Kugino is exactly my kind of dessert. The Apple Pie comes highly recommended too, so I’m already planning my next visit!

If you’re exploring the Aso area in Kumamoto, this peaceful patisserie is well worth a stop. Be sure to drop by!
