Introducing Nakahara Shougetsudo

Hello there!
This is Asukarando, your Sarukuma writer.

Today we’re heading to a wonderful spot in
Wafu, Kikuchi City, Kumamoto Prefecture
“Nakahara Shougetsudo”.

We heard there was a long-established wagashi shop tucked into the streets of Wafu, so we just had to come check it out!

Convenient parking is available right in front of and beside the shop.

Step inside Nakahara Shougetsudo and you’ll find a calm, welcoming space brimming with beautiful Japanese sweets!

The display case is filled with all kinds of delights, from delicate nerikiri (artisanal sculpted sweets) to many other varieties (^-^)

Even the front of the shop is filled with cute, eye-catching sweets (^-^)

Bottle Candy — 515 yen

Hana Konpeito Assortment (traditional star-shaped sugar candy) — 650 yen

Kumamon Monaka (crispy wafer with sweet bean filling) — 160 yen

Saigo-don & Kikuchi-kun Bussé (soft sandwich cookies) — 130 yen

Recommended Picks

Since the shop’s pride and joy is its anko (sweet red bean paste), the nerikiri is an absolute must-try!! — 260 yen

And here’s the fun part — they even have nerikiri shaped like beloved characters (^-^)/

Nerikiri tends to be thought of as a sweet for grown-ups, but with these familiar character designs,
kids feel right at home with traditional Japanese sweets too (^o^)

When you say Kumamoto, you think of Kumamon!
And when you say Kikuchi, you think of Kikuchi-kun!

We spotted dorayaki (sweet bean pancakes) featuring these adorable local mascots!

This time we picked up the
Kikuchi-kun Dorayaki — 180 yen
Yum (^o^)

Splitting Kikuchi-kun right down the middle!!!!

Soft, moist dorayaki pancakes wrapped around a beautifully balanced anko —
not too sweet, but full of presence. Absolutely fantastic!!!!!

This dorayaki really lives up to the shop’s reputation for outstanding anko (⌒0⌒)/~~

We also tried the new Sakura Florentine — 180 yen
\(^o^)/

Such a cute pink package!!
Even though it’s a wagashi shop, they also offer stylish Western-style sweets! \(^o^)/

Open the wrapper and the scent of cherry blossoms in full bloom comes drifting out~ \(^o^)/

The buttery cookie base is delightful, but the sakura and almond topping is the real star ♪
A wagashi shop offering treats that pair perfectly with coffee!

Next time, I’d love to enjoy this under the cherry blossoms~ (^o^)Nakahara Shougetsu, the wagashi shop of Kikuchi — highly recommended! (⌒0⌒)/~~
