Introducing Hachioji Central Park

Hello travelers! I’m Gussan, a writer for Sarukuma.
Today I’m excited to introduce you to Hachioji Central Park,
a hidden local gem in Hachioji, Chuo Ward, Kumamoto City.

The park sits right next to the Chateraise Hachioji branch we featured previously โ€” a handy stop for sweets after playing.
There’s no parking lot at the park itself, so please use one of the nearby coin-operated parking lots.
Right at the heart of the park stands a large multi-play structure.
It looks fairly new and features four different types of slides plus a suspension bridge โ€” perfect for adventurous kids.
Wait… how do you even use this one? (laughs)
There’s a wonderfully quirky monkey-bar setup that almost feels like it belongs in another dimension.
The rope-walking section even gives adults a real core workout.
Just beside the main play structure, you’ll find swings as well.
Across the way is an open sports ground, and
a charming caterpillar-shaped ride and a sandbox for the little ones.
The blue caterpillar is a familiar sight at parks around Kumamoto, but this was my first time spotting a pink caterpillar friend!
There’s a covered pavilion (azumaya) and a hand-washing station too.
Restrooms sit conveniently right in front of the main play structure, and they include a diaper-changing station.
One heads-up that’s common at Japanese public parks: there was no toilet paper provided, so it’s wise to bring tissues with you.

Why We Recommend Hachioji Central Park

The playground equipment is fun, of course, but the spacious lawn area right next door is just as appealing.
We visited on a Sunday and saw families playing soccer, baseball, and walking their dogs.
The grass is well-maintained and beautifully flat, making it ideal for ball games and picnics.
And here’s what truly sets Hachioji Central Park apart from other parks in the area!
Tucked behind the lawn area, you’ll find a tennis court that
anyone can use for free with a reservation.

If your kids are starting to outgrow the regular playground, the tennis court is a great way to introduce them to a brand-new activity.
In our family, my husband and I took turns โ€” one giving our older son a tennis lesson while the other played with our younger daughter on the playground.
With standard play equipment, parents often just watch from the sidelines, but kids get so much more out of the experience when their parents actually play with them.

Many parents want their kids to try a wide variety of activities โ€” and this park makes that easy.
It’s also a perfect chance for moms and dads to shake off that exercise rut, so don’t hesitate to give it a try!
