Introducing Ago-Hachi

Hello there!
This is Gussan, your SaruKuma writer!

Today I’m taking you to Kikanshi in Kikuchi City, Kumamoto Prefecture to visit
【Ago-Hachi】.

This is a true hidden gem of Kikuchi β€” known only to those in the know. Can I really capture the magic of Ago-Hachi using only photos (totally unedited!) and words?
Challenge accepted! ✨
Behold β€” the exterior that left me speechless.
You might even hesitate to park in the lot right out front!

It’s not just the rustic look β€” there’s no visible signboard at all.
You’d never guess what kind of shop this is.
There aren’t even any banner flags out front.
Only when you get close do you finally spot the small flyer at the entrance.
That’s right β€” this is a tonkatsu (pork cutlet) bento shop!
Step inside and this is what greets you.
If four adults squeeze in, there’s barely room to move! πŸ˜…

But while you wait for your tonkatsu bento, you get to enjoy
the lively banter between the cheerful auntie at the counter and
the unseen uncle frying tonkatsu in the back!
This priceless exchange is what makes Ago-Hachi’s tonkatsu bento taste even better!
“Welcome! What’ll it be today?”
The auntie chats with you like an old friend.
This kind of warm, old-school customer interaction β€” rare in modern Japan β€” instantly puts a smile on your face. 😊

Me: “What hours are you open?”
Her: “Hmm… about this kinda time, I guess.” ← She doesn’t really tell you, lol!

This time we ordered a regular tonkatsu bento and an Umekatsu (plum) bento, but…
“Oh, sorry! Hubby went and fried the potato salad one!”
“That okay?” ← And nope, they don’t redo it lol!
“Sorry about that, but please don’t write us off β€” come back again, okay?”

Some folks might get annoyed.
But somehow, the energetic banter between this husband-and-wife duo and their wonderfully human hospitality
make every little quirk completely forgivable.

There’s a comforting warmth at Ago-Hachi
that gently melts away the stress of busy life.

↓ Bonus stories from the friend who introduced me to Ago-Hachi ↓

If you call to order:
“How many?”
“Five.”
“Ah, can’t do it! (CLICK)” ← They actually hang up! πŸ˜‚
(Apparently you can only order fewer than five at a time, so groups split orders between two callers.)

I’ve also heard tales of marital squabbles overheard at the shop β€” “You old hag!” “You old geezer!” β€” that kind of comedy!
↑ Honestly, hearing that exchange in real life would have me laughing out loud! πŸ˜‚

The Ago-Hachi stories just keep coming.

Your mileage may vary, but I became a huge fan! πŸ˜†

Recommended Menu at Ago-Hachi

This time I ordered:
Umekatsu (Plum Cutlet) Bento β€” Β₯550
Potesara Katsu (Potato Salad Cutlet) Bento β€” Β₯550

When handing it over, she said: “It says ‘tonkatsu’ on the label, but inside it’s potato salad β€” I’m so sorry!”
← And no, she didn’t rewrite it lol!

Other tasty options include the Mentaiko (spicy cod roe) Cutlet Bento and the Negi (green onion) Cutlet Bento β€” there’s a wide variety of creative tonkatsu twists.
The side dishes change a little each time you visit.
Everything is fried fresh after you order β€” piping hot and crispy! β™ͺ
Umekatsu Bento.
Thin, well-seasoned cutlet paired with the tangy zing of pickled plum β€” absolutely delicious!

I thought the rice portion might be too much, but I polished it off easily. πŸ˜†
I forgot to snap a photo, but the potato salad version has both tonkatsu and potato salad fried together, giving it a cheesy, almost Western flavor. Equally rice-friendly!

I’m not sure how well an amateur’s photos and words can convey the charm of Ago-Hachi, but please do try the tonkatsu bento at this hidden Kikuchi gem.

And to the legendary couple of Ago-Hachi β€” please stay healthy and keep going forever!
I’ll definitely be back for that lively banter and piping-hot tonkatsu. 😊
