Hello there!
This is Mikan 🍊, a writer for SaruKuma.

Today I’m introducing
Bread & Cake Cipollino, located in Iruza, Yamato Town, Kamimashiki District, Kumamoto Prefecture —
Bread & Cake Cipollino.

The exterior is so charming and cute, isn’t it?

It has that inviting atmosphere
that makes you want to drop in as you pass by ♪

The shop name is clearly visible from the road!

It was my first time visiting, but I spotted the sign right away —
Ah, there it is!

And as you can see on the right side of the photo, there’s terrace seating!

You can eat in if you like.

The parking lot is right in front of the shop!

And it was almost completely full — proof of just how popular this place is.

The signboard out front lists

the daily bread baking schedule.

Sweet breads — from 9:00

Danish pastries — from 9:00

Baked-in breads — from 9:00

Baguettes — 11:30 to 12:00

Yeast breads — from 10:00

Loaf bread — from 11:30

Bagels — from 10:30

Regulars probably time their visits
around when their favorite breads come out of the oven!

We arrived around 11 AM.

There was still bread, but…

…there were also wide empty spaces like this.

The sweet spot really is opening time at 9:00!!!

I missed my chance (sob)!
And of course, the limited-edition seasonal items were already sold out…

They also have a wonderful selection of baked sweets.

And there’s even an adorable gift box designed after the famous Tsujun Bridge, a local Yamato Town landmark.

It would make a perfect souvenir to say, “I went to Yamato Town!” ♪

Honestly, just so cute it gets you excited!!

Right next to the register, there’s also a beautiful cake display case!

While we were there, customers were even picking up birthday cakes!

Now I’m curious about the cakes too… So tempting!

Recommended Menu Items

Even though many items had already sold out,

this time we got the Spicy Sausage Bread (160 yen) and the Cow’s Bottom — affectionately called “Ushi-ketsu” (160 yen).
The filling inside the Ushi-ketsu changes daily!

Today’s flavor: chocolate cream!!!

Spicy Sausage Bread

It’s a coil-style bread
with soft dough wrapped around a sausage.

I was a little worried it might be too spicy,
but decided to give it a try.

The sausage has a reddish tinge,
but it’s actually not that spicy! (laughs)

Just a gentle kick of heat at the end of each bite!

Mild enough for kids to enjoy too — perfect for the whole family.

Next up — the Ushi-ketsu (Cow’s Bottom).

I didn’t think much when I first bought it, but
honestly… Ushi-ketsu is just adorable! 💕

And can you tell from the photos?
This little guy is incredibly soft!

Imagine the texture of a beanbag cushion!!

Anyone else feel me on this softness? (laughs)

Seriously, just go buy one and squeeze it for yourself! (laughs)

It’s so soft that
with just a little tug, ahh — it splits apart.

Ahhh —

It split. Right down the middle. A clean split in two.

The Ushi-ketsu split apart.

And just look at it — tons of chocolate inside!
Fluffy white bread plus chocolate? Unbeatable, right?

Kids will absolutely dive for it (laughs)

And so will adults (laughs)

Chocolate-packed all the way to the very last bite.

Just pure bliss.

I clearly arrived at the wrong time at Cipollino this round.
But that just means I have so many more breads I want to try!

I am absolutely coming back for redemption! (That’s a promise!)

The sweet spot is opening time at 9:00!!!

That’s Cipollino, where I’ve vowed to make my comeback.
