Welcome to Sri Lanka Kumamoto 2nd
Hello, fellow travelers!
This is Cho-san, a writer for Sarukuma!
Today I’m thrilled to introduce you to
Sri Lanka Kumamoto 2nd,
located in Ansei-machi, Chuo Ward, Kumamoto City.
“When it comes to Sri Lankan curry in Kumamoto, this is THE place!” — that’s what many locals will tell you.
It’s a hugely popular restaurant right in the heart of downtown Kumamoto. ⭐︎
A quick side note before we dive in…
I’ve heard that Sri Lankan curry tends to suit Japanese palates more than Indian curry.
What do you think?
Apparently, the secret is bonito flakes (katsuobushi)!
I looked it up, and it turns out to be true!
Sri Lankan cuisine often uses a spice called “Umbalakada” — essentially the Sri Lankan version of bonito flakes —
and that umami connection is exactly why it resonates so well with Japanese taste buds. ⭐︎
Now, back to the main story…
I’ve been a regular here for over five years now ♪
In fact, I’ve visited several times in just the past week alone! (laughs)
The restaurant is located on the second floor above the MOS Burger on Sannenzaka street,
and you reach it by climbing the staircase.
You’d never guess from the stairwell, but
the interior is incredibly spacious!

Rows and rows of tables stretch across the dining room.
By the way…
Very close by — just walk down Sannenzaka, cross through the Shimotori shopping arcade, and continue onto Shiromi-machi street —
you’ll find a sister restaurant called Sri Lanka Kumamoto (the original location).
The Sri Lanka Kumamoto 2nd location we’re visiting today
has more seating and a more spacious interior.
The original Sri Lanka Kumamoto
has a slightly different atmosphere,
and I love that one too ♪
This time I visited Sri Lanka Kumamoto 2nd
during dinner hours, but at lunchtime,
even this large dining room is often completely packed!
The lunch deals are absolutely unbeatable,
so I highly recommend coming for lunch as well ⭐︎
I forgot to take a picture, but
kids’ chairs are also available.
Recommended Menu Items at Sri Lanka Kumamoto 2nd
The core menu offers
・Sri Lankan Curry
・Noodle Curry
・England Curry
・Vegetable Curry
・Dry Curry
— five varieties to choose from.
You can also customize the spice level.
Each dish has a default heat level shown on the menu,
but the staff will gladly adjust it to your preference,
so feel free to find your perfect spice level ⭐︎
For the record,
I’m not great with spicy food, so I always order it
“Super Mild” or “Mild”.
The dinner menu has even more variety,
including great-value course meals!
If you prefer ordering à la carte,
salads and
side dishes make excellent additions ♪
The à la carte selection is absolutely huge!
There’s even a “Devil Menu” billed as “perfect with beer”,
with bold spicy kicks —
but once again, you can adjust the heat (which is wonderful news for spice-shy diners like me)!
And there are even more value-packed course options.
A set with salad, drink, and dessert all included for just 1,500 yen!
For those who want to enjoy a drink with dinner,
there’s also a course with alcohol options
and a set including à la carte items and a mini curry — sounds great too ⭐︎
Whether for lunch or dinner, my pick is always the same one!!
Noodle Curry ¥900!!!
※The photo shows the mini size at ¥700.
It’s absolutely incredible! ♡
One bite and I was hooked,
and for about five years now, this has been my one and only order.
I always glance at the menu out of habit,
but when the server arrives to take my order, I find myself saying
“Noodle Curry, Mild, please.” every single time…
The bee-hoon-style noodles pair perfectly with the curry ⭐︎
It might sound like an unusual combination at first,
but trust me — you have to try it!
And here’s what my friend ordered:
Vegetable Curry ¥900.
※The photo shows the mini size at ¥700.
Simple yet bursting with spice — also delicious ♪
And just a few days later…
On a separate visit, another friend gave me a passionate pitch and convinced me to try…
Dry Curry ¥900!
※The photo shows the mini size at ¥700.
And this one is incredibly delicious too!
I also ordered a Lemon Tea ¥300 ⭐︎
Whenever I come to Sri Lanka Kumamoto, I tend to order tea.
(It comes included with the lunch set, so it’s a great deal ♪)
I was so loyal to Noodle Curry,
but now I’ll be torn between two favorites…
My loyalty is wavering!
But not to worry!!!
Apparently I’m not the only customer with this problem.
There’s a “Special Curry — ¥1,300” on the menu
that lets you enjoy both at once!!
The friend who introduced me to Dry Curry actually ordered this ⭐︎
Truly the choice of a foodie!
From now on, I think this is the one I’ll settle on ⭐︎
By the way…
You may have noticed I keep ordering the “mini size” —
that’s because lately my appetite has exploded,
and I’ve gotten into the habit of grabbing cake right after curry…
As a small act of self-restraint, I order the mini size
— but on no-cake days, I happily go for the regular size!
If you’re visiting Kumamoto, I highly recommend treating yourself to
this spice-packed Sri Lankan curry experience ♪
