About the Bakery

Hello, fellow travelers!

It’s Binako, your Saru Kuma writer, here with another delicious discovery from Kumamoto Prefecture!

Today, I’m excited to introduce you to a hidden gem located in Kajiya, Kamoto-machi, Yamaga City, Kumamoto Prefecture:
“Pan Koubou Campagne” (Bakery Workshop Campagne).

Tucked inside the popular Michi-no-Eki Mizube Plaza Kamoto (a roadside station and rest stop), this beloved bakery has been a treasured part of my childhood—I have fond memories of stopping by with my mom to pick out fresh bread together.Behold the bakery’s signature creation:
the Yasohachi Bread, made with locally grown rice flour.
First introduced back in 2001, Yasohachi was a true pioneer of rice flour bread in Japan, made from rice grown right here in the local fields—a one-of-a-kind specialty.

Brown Rice Yasohachi Bread — 378 yen
Miso Yasohachi Bread — 378 yen
There’s an amazing variety of Yasohachi flavors to choose from!

You’ll also find seasonal specials like:
Chestnut Gopan (Rice Bread) — 200 yen

There’s also a wonderful selection of handmade sandwiches.
Every single bread at Campagne is baked fresh on-site,
so you can enjoy the goodness of freshly made, handcrafted bread! ♪Cranberry Scones (3-pack) — 389 yen
The scone selection is impressive too!

With options like brown rice loaves and other wholesome choices,
the entire menu is gentle on the body—perfect for adults and kids alike! ^^

Just to the right of the entrance, you’ll find a drink corner along with some refreshing frozen cream puffs.

There’s also a cozy eat-in area inside the shop.

With kids’ chairs and comfy sofa seating, it’s a wonderfully welcoming spot for families with little ones.

And toward the back of the shop, there’s even a nursing room—
a thoughtful touch that brings peace of mind to mothers traveling with babies.

Recommended Menu

This time, instead of the famous Yasohachi,
I tried something sitting right next to it—
the Hatake Marugoto Pan (Whole Field Bread) — 350 yen! It’s about the size of two and a half fists—a generous, satisfying portion!
This bread is also made with rice flour. The signature mochi-mochi (chewy) texture of rice flour bread
is so irresistible, you might just lose yourself in it…

Plus, with kokuto (Japanese brown sugar) baked right in, you get a gentle, mellow sweetness
and a delightful toasty aroma that take the flavor to another level.
Chunky nuts scattered throughout add the perfect textural accent—
your appetite won’t stand a chance…!!!!

Toasting it brings out a whole new texture—
crispy on the outside, soft and chewy on the inside, offering a totally different way to enjoy it.
It’s delicious both as-is and toasted.
But honestly? Plain and simple is the way to go.

Next, I tried the Chocolate Pie — 185 yen!!!

The flaky pastry is absolutely amazing.
The baked chocolate on top has this rich, fragrant aroma
that promises pure deliciousness, and as you bite in,
even more chocolate emerges from the inside for a truly indulgent experience.

The pastry is wonderfully crisp yet moist and chewy at the same time.
Every bite blends the sweetness of the chocolate with the savory goodness of the pastry
for a perfectly balanced flavor.

From rice flour breads to sweet pastries and sandwiches,
this warm, friendly bakery has it all.
It’s a place packed with all my favorite childhood memories. ^^
