2020.11.28

A SaruKuma writer visits Hama Sushi Higashi Bypass in Higashi Ward, Kumamoto City, and shares a firsthand report. Price range: from 100 yen per plate. We also cover family-friendly features, access, and opening hours.
About the Restaurant
Today we’re heading to
Shimonanbu, Higashi Ward, Kumamoto City, to visit
Hama Sushi Higashi Bypass, one of Japan’s most beloved conveyor belt sushi (kaiten-zushi) chains.

There’s parking right beneath the restaurant, so you can stay dry even on rainy days — a real bonus for visitors traveling with little ones!

On weekdays, plates start at just 90 yen — incredible value!
That 10-yen difference per plate really adds up when the whole family is dining out!
The restaurant also participates in the GoToEat campaign, making it even more wallet-friendly.

And good news for parents: there’s an elevator, so strollers are welcome too!
They also offer baby chairs to borrow!
This style of secure baby chair makes mealtime so much easier when dining with little ones.

Children’s serving plates are available too!

The restroom has a baby changing table, so you can dine out solo with your child without any worries.
That kind of facility can be a real lifesaver when you’re traveling with kids!
Recommended Menu
Here’s a peek at the menu:
Of course there’s plenty of sushi,

but also udon noodles, desserts, and even izakaya-style dishes — modern conveyor belt sushi restaurants in Japan really do have it all!
This time, we came hungry for the famous Sea Urchin (Uni) Festival featured in their TV commercials.

Uni! Uni! Uni! Fried oysters! More uni! (We may have snuck a fried oyster plate in there too.)
Sea urchin is usually a once-per-visit splurge, but during the Uni Festival we couldn’t help ordering plate after plate. Uni wraps for just 100 yen? Yes, please!
We even tried the indulgent salmon roe and aosa seaweed chawanmushi (savory egg custard).

And of course, there’s a wide variety of kid-friendly options too!

Duck Udon ¥260
They also offer kitsune (sweet fried tofu) and ebi-ten (shrimp tempura) versions!

Karaage (Japanese fried chicken) & Fries ¥280
An unbeatable price for that generous portion!
This dish alone could fill you up.
And there are even coupons available through the SmartNews app!

Definitely worth the download!
Here’s a fun bonus for anime fans: the touch-panel ordering system currently features the voice of Natsuki Hanae, best known as the lead voice actor of the hit anime Demon Slayer (Kimetsu no Yaiba).
It’s a treat for young Demon Slayer fans — and probably their parents too!
Conveyor belt sushi is one of those quintessentially Japanese dining experiences that’s both fun and stress-free with kids in tow.
Whether you’re dining as a family or just a parent and child, it’s a small luxury everyone can enjoy.
