About the Bakery

Hello there, fellow travelers!

This is Binako, your SaruKuma writer, here to share another local gem with you!

Today we’re heading to Hondo-machi Hondobaba in Amakusa City, Kumamoto Prefecture, to visit a beloved neighborhood bakery called “Guu Choki Pan” (Handmade Bread Shop).

Guu Choki Pan — even the name (which means “Rock Paper Scissors” in Japanese) is wonderfully cute!

The brick-style exterior is so stylish!
And there’s convenient parking right in front of the shop.

Inside, you’ll find delights like the Curry Pan (curry-filled bread, 100 yen) and the Big Chestnut An-Pie (sweet bean and chestnut pie, 145 yen), with a wide variety of breads to please both kids and adults.

The bakery was buzzing with happy customers during our visit!

I absolutely love this one —
Milk France (sweet milk-filled French bread, 115 yen)

And the prices are wonderfully reasonable!

There are many varieties of bagels too — perfect for breakfast on the go!

Double Anko Tsubu-an Pan (double sweet red bean paste bun, 140 yen)
DOUBLE the red bean paste?!
You know this one’s going to be amazing!

Whole Wheat Bread: 269 yen per loaf / 538 yen for a full loaf
Behold — my beloved
whole wheat bread…

And there are plenty of other shokupan (Japanese-style sliced bread) varieties to choose from!

There’s a self-bagging counter next to the register, so you can pack up your bread treasures yourself after paying.

Recommended Menu Items

This time, I had to try the famous Curry Pan!

The outside is incredibly crispy and delicious!
Seriously crunchy and amazing!
The inside dough is soft and chewy, with a wonderfully spicy curry filling!

That crispy-meets-chewy combination is simply heavenly!

I also tried the Crunchy Choco Cornet (chocolate-filled cone-shaped bread, 115 yen)!

Rich, melty chocolate oozes out with every bite~
The combination of crunchy bits and fluffy bread makes for a delightful texture experience!

Milk France (115 yen) — also a must-try!

It comes with a perforated cut line
so you can easily tear it in half — such a thoughtful touch!

And it really is incredibly delicious…
The hearty, crusty bread
pairs beautifully with the rich, sweet milk filling
creating a perfect harmony of flavors!

If you’re visiting Amakusa, definitely stop by Guu Choki Pan for a taste of authentic Japanese bakery culture!
