A SaruKuma writer visits “Ganakai Park” in Tomiai-machi, Minami-ku, Kumamoto City, and reports on what she found. We’ve also rounded up family-friendly tips, access info, and opening hours.

Hello, travelers!
This is Rikotama, writer for SaruKuma!

Today I’m taking you to Tomiai-machi, Minami-ku, Kumamoto City, to a hidden gem called Ganakai Park (雁回公園)!

You’ll spot this sign right along National Route 38, which connects Uto with the Jonan area — that’s your cue to turn off!

From there, you’ll head a short way up a mountain road. Don’t worry — it’s fully paved, so it’s an easy drive (*^-^*)

The parking lot is right at the park entrance.

It looks like there’s space for around 30 cars — plenty of room.

Apologies for the harsh backlight in this shot (>_<)

Here you’ll find the Minami-ku Mt. Ganakai Walking Trail Map!

There are five different walking courses up Mt. Ganakai (314m / about 1,030 ft).

One of them starts right here from the park (‘◇’)ゞ

It’s roughly 1.3 km to the summit — even at a relaxed pace, you can reach the top in about an hour.

From the summit, you can take in sweeping views of Mt. Aso, the Ariake Sea, and the Shiranui Sea all at once ☆

I’m definitely planning to come back on a weekend morning to make the climb (≧▽≦)

The moment you walk in from the parking lot, the view opens up dramatically!

The autumn leaves were just starting to turn, and they were absolutely gorgeous ♡

The weather was perfect that day, and we were treated to truly stunning fall foliage 🍁 ♬

One important heads-up though — watch out for wild boars!!!
※These warning signs are posted all around the area (=゚ω゚)ノ
Please stay alert during your visit!

You’ll find several drinking fountains scattered through the park.

Walk straight on from the parking lot and you’ll come out onto a huge, well-kept sports field!

It’s so spacious you could fit three baseball games on it at once (=゚ω゚)ノ

Restrooms sit right next to the field.

Both Japanese-style and Western-style toilets are available, but heads-up for traveling parents — there’s no diaper-changing table (>_<)

There’s also one vending machine right beside the restrooms ♪

What Makes This Park Special

And here are the playground attractions (≧▽≦)!!
A whole wooden adventure playground!!

The rope-net gaps are reasonably wide, so it’s great fun for everyone from kindergarteners to elementary-school kids (*^▽^*)!

There’s even a rope swing!

This one’s strictly kid-sized, though (;^ω^)

The slide is surprisingly fast!

Two of us thirty-something moms couldn’t resist a turn ourselves (≧◇≦)

Benches are conveniently placed near the play structures.

I’d often noticed the Ganakai Park sign over the years, but I had no idea such a wide-open field and playground were waiting at the top of this winding mountain road (=゚ω゚)ノ

And right now, the autumn colors are absolutely breathtaking ☆

Definitely add it to your itinerary if you’re visiting Kumamoto with family or friends!!
