A Sarukuma writer visits “Ocha no Horinoen Chaika Kumamoto Kamitori Store” in Kamitori-machi, Chuo-ku, Kumamoto City. Price range: from 500 yen. Family-friendly tips, access, and opening hours all in one place.
Hello, fellow travelers!
After successfully getting my little one to sleep,
this is Binako, your Sarukuma writer!
Today I’m excited to introduce
a wonderful tea café in Kamitori-machi, Chuo-ku, Kumamoto City:
“Ocha no Horinoen Chaika Kumamoto Kamitori Store”.
The exterior is one giant mirror — perfect if you happen to be 2 meters tall and need to check your appearance!
Look at this!!!
They roast hojicha (roasted green tea) right outside the shop, so the most amazing toasty aroma wafts out as you walk by!!
I walked past once,
but had to U-turn and come back!

Inside, there’s a cozy café space where you can enjoy delicious tea-based sweets and treats ( *´艸`)

From 11:00 to 14:00, they offer a lunch set
for an incredible 500 yen!!!
Generous portions at this price — what a steal!

The café space has a calm, relaxing atmosphere ^^
They even provide tableware for kids,
making it a wonderfully welcoming place ( *´艸`)

On your way to the café space,
you’ll spot all kinds of traditional Japanese tea sweets that had me whispering
“These look amazing~~”

The restroom even has a diaper-changing station,
so it’s a very family-friendly spot for parents with little ones ^^

Right by the entrance there’s also a small seating area,
so even if you’re just grabbing a drink to go, you can sit and savor it for a moment ♪
Recommended Menu

Here’s the drink menu ^^
Most drinks come iced or hot, so you can pick based on the weather or your mood.
Matcha Shake — 500 yen
Hojicha (Roasted Green Tea) Shake — 500 yen
Deep-Steamed Cold Tea — 300 yen
Sweet Matcha — 300 yen
Matcha Cappuccino — 350 yen

They also have drinks featuring warabi mochi (chewy bracken-starch jelly) ♪
Matcha Latte with Warabi Mochi — 500 yen
Hojicha Latte with Warabi Mochi — 500 yen

This time, I went with
Hojicha Latte with Warabi Mochi — 500 yen!!
Those two beautiful layers are pure perfection~~
Give it a good stir before drinking!

There’s no way this isn’t delicious!!
The toasty aroma of hojicha is irresistible!
(switching into Kumamoto dialect mode)
With every sip, those bouncy little warabi mochi pieces
feel like they’re doing squats in your mouth!
The more you chew, the more sweetness comes out,
pairing perfectly with the roasted aroma of the hojicha (*´Д`)
And there’s a generous amount of warabi mochi packed inside!!
What amazing value!!
I really want everyone to try this…
Next time, I’m definitely bringing my kid along!!
Be sure to stop by when you’re in Kumamoto~!!
