Introducing On Cafe Atatakai-Ki

Hello! This is Gachako, writer for SaruKuma.
After a rough day the day before, I was craving something soul-soothing — the kind of heartwarming meal that only a nurse could make. There was only one place to go!

Today I’m introducing a beautiful traditional Japanese house cafe located in Yamaga City, Kumamoto【On Cafe Atatakai-Ki】.

The street in front of the shop is quite narrow, so if you’re driving a larger vehicle or aren’t fully confident behind the wheel, please park at the free Buzen Kaido Parking Lot, which holds up to 100 cars. From the parking lot, it’s just a 2-minute walk. Turn into the alley right next to Sagrada bakery.

The narrow alley might feel a bit uncertain at first — but don’t worry, you’re on the right track.

Just follow the signs and keep walking 🎵

You can also park right in front of the old house (kei cars recommended due to limited space).

Inside, you’ll find three tables and two counter seats.

The elegant tatami room (zashiki) can be reserved by phone.
If you’re coming with kids, just let them know in advance — it makes things smoother. The space is popular for mom-and-baby gatherings, too.

The menu is simple and beautiful:
Omusubi Gozen (Rice Ball Set Meal) 1,000 yen
Omusubi Gozen with coffee and dessert 1,500 yen

The menu card itself is absolutely packed with thoughtful information.
There’s even a column on the back side that changes monthly.
It’s filled with so much heart — definitely worth reading like a small zine.

Recommended Menu at On Cafe Atatakai-Ki

I ordered the Omusubi Gozen.

The rice balls are made with ancient black rice and a heritage variety called “Homase,” topped with umeboshi (pickled plum), shiso tsukudani, and miso-pickled tofu.

Light, airy, and fluffy — these onigiri are simple but absolutely delicious.

I want to learn how to make this shira-ae (tofu salad) right away. It honestly tastes like something from a high-end Japanese restaurant.

Heart-shaped happy cucumbers ♡ By this point, all of yesterday’s troubles had completely melted away.

The nagaimo (Japanese yam) isobeage has a lovely curry flavor — kids will absolutely love it!

The miso soup is enriched with soy milk, packed with isoflavones.
The vegetables are carefully balanced and prepared using the traditional kasane-ni layered cooking method, bringing out deep umami without using any dashi stock!

I also indulged in the dessert set. The rose-shaped apple is so cute!
Underneath the ice cream, you’ll find Atatakai-Ki’s signature pancake.

Regulars came in one after another — you can really feel that this place values community. That said, even if you’re a first-timer visiting alone, you’ll feel right at home.
It’s the kind of cafe where you naturally want to exchange contact info with the people next to you. (I know that sounds suspicious, but trust me — it’s not!)
Thank you to the kind neighbor who listened to my venting that day.
