What Makes This Spot Special

A walking path surrounded by lush greenery♪

The atmospheric pond is currently dry, with no water filling its basin.

Time seems to slow down here — perfect for a relaxed stroll.

Kids have fun hopping across the stepping stones♬

And then — a steep flight of stone steps appears!

At the top of the stairs sits the Hosokawa Family Mausoleum.

Carrying a small child up was a bit of a workout,
but we made it to the top, where rows of historic graves came into view.

The Hosokawa clan are legendary figures in Kumamoto’s history —
three generations served as feudal lords here, which is truly remarkable!

With so many family mausoleums lined up together, the space has an almost mystical, sacred feel.

Although it’s officially called a “natural park,”
it actually feels much more like a traditional Japanese garden!

The grounds are filled with maple trees, so we highly recommend a leisurely visit during autumn foliage season
to enjoy the brilliant red and orange leaves (^^♪

(Heads up — we got plenty of mosquito bites going up and down those stairs, so
we strongly suggest bringing insect repellent!( ;∀;))
